"Some women fear the fire. Some women simply become it...."
“…and you are sure you are ready for this-“
He was abruptly cut off as Whisper raised her hand to him and nodded. Slowly, cautiously, she reached for one of her katanas, her gaze fixed on him the entire time, not sure what to expect…
Honestly, she was terrified and not sure if she was ready, but she wasn’t going to tell him that…not now. It was a little late for that considering the circumstances.
Against her better judgement, she had agreed to sign up for some training at a nearby dojo in Okinawa. Her trainer thought it would be good for her to study with others to get not only a fresh perspective and learn techniques, but train against others she was not familiar with. The training promised to hone one's skills, improve coordination, speed, and agility. It sounded perfect at first! Almost like a routine workout. That is until she met her trainer…
A former assassin. Well this is unexpected.
The Bengal tiger, looking to be in his late 40s, early 50s, gave her a toothy grin as he shook her hand, though she knew what he was really doing: sizing her up and seeing what he was up against- exactly what she was doing to him. Their eyes never left each other as if they were having a stare down. His grip was firm and unwavering. Upon closer inspection, one could see several cuts and scars on his arms …”battle scars” one could say.
“I have heard much about you, Whisper. You have quite the reputation. Come, let’s put it to the test! I just hope you survive your “training.”” He let out a teasing growl as he grabbed his weapons, a quiver full of arrows with serrated tips, and a longbow, one specially built for his massive build.
Whisper didn’t like how he said training- there was a bit of irony to those words. Usually she would brush it off and yet…
She decided she better keep her wits about her and bring her S game to this training. Something told her there was much more to it, and he was no ordinary trainer-
Dodging each flaming arrow, Whisper taunted at him, "Come on, is that the best you have?! What happened to this "special" training you spoke so highly of-" She barely finished her sentence as an arrow went flying past her left cheek...she could smell a singe of smoke. As she looked back, she hissed and jumped up- one of his arrows had burnt the tip of her tail!
He scoffed as he reached for two more arrows, igniting them as he did so, "jihi ga nai." He barely gave her much reaction time, so Whisper was mostly going off instinct. One wrong move and-
An arrow shot past her silver hair, just barely brushing the tuft of her ear, “Hey, watch it!” She growled as she waved her blade at him.
He merely shot another arrow in her direction, ricocheting against the blade, "If you want me to stop shooting fiery arrows of death at you, come at me! Let's see how good you are, little kitty." He was taunting her...and it worked.
It seemed unfair to attack a ranged person with melee weapons, yet something told her he would not have egged her on unless he was prepared. Grabbing both of her katanas, she charged towards him as fast she she could, zigzagging towards him to dodge the arrows he shot at her. Her plan was to get close enough for him not to shoot at her with as much accuracy. She lunged towards him, not targeting him, but his bow! She watched it snap in half and fall to the floor. It worked!
Suddenly, she felt a stab of sharp pain as something took the breath out of her and picked her up from behind...causing her to drop both her weapons to the floor-
That bastard had managed to scoop her up, grab her in a constrictive bear hug, and disarm her! She felt herself losing consciousness as his grip tightened around her. She bit and clawed into his massive arm, hoping that might loosen his grip. He barely flinched. Though he was obviously in pain and bleeding, he would not let go...not yet.
"You. Need. More. Training." A low, guttural growl filled her ear. He grunted as he slowly loosening his grip on her; he seemed oddly satisfied, as if he made a point.
He gingerly placed her on the floor and handed her something...a protein bar?
"Eat. You need your strength." He nodded as he sat a few feet besides her and opened one of his own, offering her some water from his flask.
With a defeated sigh, Whisper ate the bar he offered her. She was so on edge, she didn't realize how hungry the training had made her as she quickly wolfed it down. It was obvious this guy was good. VERY GOOD.
They sat in silence for a bit before he spoke once more, "You are good, but you have become complacent . You need to be pushed out of your comfort zone to reach the apex of your abilities. I will help get you there...if you want. Just realize, it will not be easy, nor I will go easy on you. I suggest you back out now if you are not prepared or ready for a challenge. Because I was going easy on you earlier."
Her eyes grew wide as she looked up at him in shock- THAT was easy?! Holy shit...
As she looked him over, she realized that minus the few cuts and bites she left in his arms, he was unmoved. Yes, she had managed to break his weapon, but he had still been able to not only fight in close combat, but defeat her with ease. She could not let that happen; not again.
"I'm ready. Let's do this!" She rushed over to grab her weapons- wait, where were they?!
"You won't be needing those." He had put them in the corner with his now broken bow, "We are going to work on basic defenses, along with hand to hand combat before you touch those weapons again. A weapon is only as strong as its wielder. If you become too dependent on them, you are nothing."
Her soft lavender eyes suddenly turned cold as ice as she sized him up once more-
"Come at me as if your life depends on it..."
(To be continued...?)
Last summer piece of Whisper!
(Technically her fur has already has changed colors for the season, but we're going to ignore that for the sake of this post).
This piece is a bit of a cliffhanger, or rather the story is-
I love the fact that Whisper is flawed, imperfect, and yes, even she finds herself outmatched sometimes! And that is okay. It means she has room to improve and grow as an assassin and fighter....hence why she is currently undergoing training at the moment.
I cannot stand people whose characters are "perfect" and always win every single time; it's unrealistic- mini rant there, sorry.
This gorgeous piece is courtesy of pinkerie. Holy crap, this is my first time working with them, and they did NOT disappoint! From the dynamic pose, to lightning effects and just overall mood of this piece! I could not post this piece until I thought of a (hopefully) proper story/description to match it!
Highly recommended artist- and yes, there will be more art of Whisper from them soon! Thank you so much again~
