Bookwyrm is one of the children born to Magenta and the original Silver Dragon. A genius even at a young age, she deduced that her parents had been heroes well before her siblings knew. After a discussion about her revelation with her parents, she created and implemented a plan with the goal of becoming the next Silver Dragon. She used her intellect to gain a sizeable enough fortune which she then spent travelling far and wide learning everything she could to reach her goal. She was very nearly ready when news reached her that someone had already claimed the mantle of The Silver Dragon. Just as she'd decuded her parents identities years before, she quickly figured out who was behind the new mask, a secret that infuriated her yet also drove her to find a new alternate identity.
In her travels, she'd come across references to a magical book that granted practically anything to the one who possessed it. Undertaking the arduous journey to locate it and finding that the book was indeed real, she also learned that it could only be earned after years of tests of character, wisdom, and compassion. She passed the tests in a mere few months, delighting the keepers of the book and the book itself - for the book had gained something of a mind of its own and longed to see the world again.
The book, embossed with a golden gryphon's head, is psychically linked to its bearer and can do almost anything the bearer asks, though some tasks can come with a heavy price. It can be an offensive weapon as well as possessing defense capabilities and alter it's size though it retains its basic shape and proportions. It can open portals to just about anywhere. It can grant the bearer and those accompanying the bearer the ability to breathe underwater or in airless space. And oh yeah, it makes a pretty good tool for looking up information too.

Meaning she used some under the desk methods to pass those tests? No. The central irony of this character is that she forgoes all such physical considerations to get this book and become Bookwyrm. Later on after she's been a hero for a while, she finds it difficult to actually get her mind on the subject of sex though everyone around her has it very much on their minds.
No, I was refering to how Lex Luthor would often get his way. He would put on a friendly face and be Mr. Perfect for however long it took to achieve his goal, then he'd go back to being a criminal mastermind. Your response, however, especially with the mentioning of actually being a hero, has shown clearly that is not the case with her.
She does have something of an ulterior motive in that she wants to establish her own hero identity with the help of the book but after that, she fully intends to help people as best she can, unlike Mr. Luthor who's pretty much in it for himself first to last no matter how he acts in between. He certainly is one messed up cookie but, sadly, entirely human too.
very intriguing; drawing some background from Professor X and his brother perhaps, with the quest, but instead of jealousy, of wanting to aid the world as motive. Very intriguing, and I also wonder how many others know of the book, and desire it. How many occult societies would literally burn a building to get it?
I really hadn't thought out any others that might be seeking the book, though the book does have ways of defending itself from misuse. Not just anyone can use it and unless the book actually trusts whomever's looking at it, they'll see nothing but page after page of blank paper, though it's not really paper as it can't be torn or burned or anything else you can do to destroy a conventional book.
*nods* was just seeing parellels to that stone Xaviers brother found that made him juggernaut. Although it's good the book can defend itself, what if someone became so convinced they were pre-destined to utilize the book, they were willing to do near-villanish things to claim it, thinking they would better use it's power to help people? could be a two edged sword too, them trying to get the book without doing something to fall from it's 'good graces'
Ah, you're speaking of Cain Marko and the crimson gem of Cyttorak. It's a wonder Dr. Strange never tried to take the gem back since he has some mystical ties somehow to the gem. I think part of the tests are geared towards determining motives of whomever seeks the book and that's why it usually takes years to pass all of the tests.
