In a world comparable to our own...
As the studies of ethereal magic progressed, a lot of places that could afford it bought state-of-the-art nullifiers. For countries that relied on magic for defense, this posed too much of a threat. That's why they started to turn their heads toward something similar, but operating on different levels. They found it with people who were shunned and considered madmen for dabbling with art never before thought to have any practical means - the material magic.
I also learned something while doing this one: Good-looking spots take more effort that I expected...
