I am currently revisiting ranged hunting/warfare weapons for the drekir and, while I am wracking my brain over weapons that aren't throwing sticks, throwing spears, atlatls, etc. do to their body plans and ergonomics I am trying to force crossbows in. Crossbows are kinda a mixed bag and inevitably have to be large and long so the drek can properly hold them to the side and straight in front of their chest (the "bow action" needs to not be hugging anything). Of course its also difficult for them to really aim the crossbow and from the front they would really need some support like a shooting stick, and since they're instinct shot it makes them rather flawed compared to weapons like the atlatl that are faster to reload and work better with drekir ergonomics.
But a drek can put a lot more power into the prods of a crossbow than an atlatl throw and you dont need as much movement to use it effectively when compared to something like a throwing stick. Also thanks to a drek having a strong legs and back, with the proper tools spanning a powerful crossbow is reasonably easy, combined with the often smaller arrows or bolts helps make a crossbow a better hunting/warfare weapon for dense environments where a drek may not have the open space to run around everywhere.

Kinda shoehorning crossbows in but I just kinda want a bit more variety than various throwing darts, spears, sticks, and other such things in the lore so hopefully this will help with that. I might do a ramble on these things soon.
