“Ms Tunderana you ARE aware of that this is the third time you’ve changed your major field of study right?”
“I’m sorry sir… it’s just”
”Let me guess, you didn’t fit in with the course and feel you might be better somewhere else, right?”
”… yes sir…”
”Just like the last three times. Ms. Tunderana the faculty has been patient with you but this has to stop. Your working hard to keep your grades up and trying your best at each course but you just can’t keep switching majors like this. Understood?”
”Yes sir, I’m sorry sir…”
“It’s okay… If you’re willing to take a suggestion you might want to look into coaching as your next major.”
“But isn’t that”
”A lot like fighting? Not really… the job of a coach is to make sure their team is training correctly, getting stronger, and improving. Now I’ve seen your record, you have an amazing talent for battling”
”Sir…”
”I know, I know. You don’t want to make a job of it or even really do it, BUT what I mean is you have a knack for it, as well as skills in leading, a lot of patience, and a compulsion to help people… if your willing to give it a try it might just be the major you’ve been looking for.”
”… thank you sir, I guess it wouldn’t hurt to look into it…”
”Good, I suggest you see if there’s a team out there you’d like to support. Now hurry along… and TRY not to come back here about this again please? I’ve already memorized how these conversations go enough to guess what you’re going to say.”
”… sorry Sir… um… a-am I really that predictable?”
“When you come in here you are, now have a nice day Ms. Tunderana.”

Maddie sighed as she left the counselors office. Once again the miltank found herself looking for a new non-combat major and once again her grades would most likely take a plunge because of it. She’d thought the medical course would have worked for her, but she’d found herself struggling and unable to focus there as well. As if she didn’t go to tutoring enough already…
“Maybe I should start looking for a team to coach...” she said softly as she headed down the hall. She honestly didn’t think she was up for it… she might be good at battling, somehow sporting an amazing record for someone almost exclusively in non-battle centric courses, but she doubted she could help anyone actually improve… what was she going to do?
As she passed by the gym she noticed a furious looking houndoom guy peeking in through the door as the sound of ear piercing wailing reaches her. She winced but considering she’d dealt with full nurseries of wailing babies it didn’t faze her. As she got closer she heard the houndoom muttering cussing under his breath in some language she didn’t understand and biting his lip. She got to the doors just as he started to shove them open and placed her hand on his shoulder.
“Are you okay?” she asked gently, concerned as he never even looked up from what he was focused on in the gym, the fury in his gaze visible. "...Not at all. 'M inches away from comittin' murder. Yeh'd better leave 'fore yeh get caught in th' middle." He said, voice steady and even, again going for the door. Once again managing to hold him back Maddie stepped up and peeked through the hole to see what all the fuss was.
She immediately recognized the group inside, Team Pre-K. She’d spent a week running into several of their members and having to learn that they WEREN’T small children who’d gotten lost. It looked like they’d been trying to do some training.
TRYING being the operative word, thanks to the only member of the team who didn‘t look like a child, Kimmie the togetic, who was wailing at a painful pitch and seemed to be in the middle of a toddler styled tantrum. The others had been reduced to mere bystanders by the noise and it looked like the whole session was going nowhere.
“Huh… looks like the kind of tantrum a toddler throws when you refuse to give them something…” she turned to Janus and gave him a timid look “Um… would you… mind if I went in there and tried something before you busted in? If that’s okay I mean…” the houndoom just glared at Maddie, sizing her up for a moment before snorting "...They're all yours, but if'n yeh don't 'elp 'em Arceus 'elp meh 'm gonna bloody well murder that bitch."
“Oh dear… w-well… I’ll try my best…” gulping a little she pushed open the doors gently and walked over to the small group. They didn’t even notice her till she was a few feet away because of the noise of Kimmie’s wailing. Taking a deep breath she walked over to the floating and screaming girl and gently clasped her shoulders. “Shhhhhhhhh, shhhhhhhh there sweetie…” she says softly, talking to Kimmie in the gentle, calm, soothing tone she used with upset toddlers “There, there everything will be okay, just calm down please.”
The awkward, stunned silence of the rest of pre-K was only matched by the sniffling and whimpering dieing wail of Kimmie as she looked at Maddie, Maddie went on “Now then, could you tell me what’s wrong? I might be able to help.” She said, using the same calming voice. The togetic sniffled “I… I w-w-wanted to g-go play d-dress up… bu, bu…” she whimpered “they w-wanted me t-to have to t-traaaaaaaain!!!” she finished in a mini-wail, about to start back up again.
“Shhhhhhh…” Maddie soothed, stopping her pre-wail “They’re your friends right?” Kimmie sniffled “W-well then WHY DUN THEY WANNA PLAY WITH MEEEEEE!!!” she shrieked, making even Maddie wince as the miltank hugged her “Shhhhhhhhh! There’s no need to yell… and they are your friends, but this is important to them… right?” she asked gently, making Kimmie blink and have to think about it “W-well…”
“Then wouldn’t it be nice to help them?” she asked gently, gently rubbing her shoulders. “… m-maybe…” Maddie smiled and patted her head “I’m sure they’ll be happy to play with you afterwards, but right now they need you to help them… think you can do it?” Kimmie hung he head a little and pouted at this “I guess so…”
“Good.” Maddie said, giving a pleased smile and hugging the togetic “How the HELL did you do that!?” Sammi asked loudly, as Janus muttered to himself "...Un-fecking-believ'ble." as he continued watching from the door. The miltank blushed and tried to think of the way to word it to keep from upsetting Kimmie again “Well… um… I… I kinda had some practice back home… um… you were going to train right?” she asked, quickly trying to change the subject.
Sammi snorted at this “Yeah, these idiots sure as heck NEED it! Pampers over here couldn’t outrun a three year old, teddy over here can’t take a hit to save his plush toy butt, and HER…!!!” the dratini’s tirade is cut short as she reaches Kimmie thanks to a well placed slap to the back of the head by Jane “Ow!!! HEY!!!” she shouted, rubbing the back of her head as Jane whispered “Don’t start her back up again.”
“Wait, could you explain it again?” Maddie asked, confused both by Sammi’s description of her teammates problems and her nicknames for them. It was easy enough to guess who Teddy was… meaning the little pichu, Andrew if she remember correctly, was “Pampers”… not exactly the kind of nickname you’d give someone you’re supposed to be friend with in her opinion “Does she mean people keep catching you as you’re trying to outrun them?” she asked, kneeling down to Andrew’s level.
The little pichu blushed, looked down, and shifted timidly on his paws but nodded as a strange idea came to Maddie’s mind. Maybe… no, it would seem silly… but still it wouldn’t hurt to try at least, with this team it just might work actually. “Andrew? Could you please do me a favor lift your arms up?” The pichu blinked and looked up to her confused, but at this point he just did it without thinking. After all she’d managed to stop Kimmie’s crying, he owed her for that and what was the worst she could do?
“Chuuuuuuuuuu!!!!” he squeaked as he found himself lifted up under the armpits like a toddler by the cow. “Hmmmm…” she hummed softly, bouncing the pichu in her arms a little as she sizes him up. She wouldn’t have believed it before this but little guy felt and was built 100% like a larger version of one of the four year olds she looked after back at the orphanage, maybe even a three year old. “Oh my….” She giggled a little and gave him a quick hug “You’re just so adorable!” He was even as soft and as cuddly as a real little one.
“Chuuuuuuuu! P-please l-let me g-gooooo!” Andrew whined softly as Maddie smiled and held him out again “I think I have a solution to your trouble with folks catching up to you.” This stopped Andrew’s struggling immediately “Chu?” he asked looking to her in confusion. “Well… back home I care for little kids and a while back when I was watching them playing tag I noticed something that might help you… that and when they’re running away so they don’t have to go take a nap…”
“…” Andrew was visibly not impressed by this as one large ear twitched unhappily. Maddie blushed and shook her head “Oh no I don’t mean it like that…” she gently sets Andrew down and with the soft finesse of someone who’d dressed uncooperative little kids she moves his limbs as if to measure them for him and gently pokes his tummy in a non teasing way “What I mean is you have similar proportions and body shape as them so it should work the same for you… willing to listen?” she asked, smiling and gently petting his head.
“w-well…” whether he wanted to admit it or not she had a point… and he was in pretty desperate need of some kind of help “O-okay… I guess s-so.” Maddie smiled and with the grace of an experienced mother showing a child how to tie their shoes she led Andrew though the motions of running “It’s simple really… they don’t try to run straight and instead simply keep making quick turns at random. I believe pokeball players use a similar trick but since your short enough people have to reach DOWN to hit you if you suddenly turn and make them miss they’ll have to regain their balance before they can keep chasing you.” She explained with a smile.
“Chuuuu… I g-guess it could work….” Andrew admitted, embarrassed both by the way she’d led him through it and the fact he had to have some help to figure out such a simple idea. Maddie just smiled and gave him a reassuring hug “I know you could have come up with it on your own, I’m just happy to help sweetie.” She said, the tone not unlike congratulating a toddler on dressing himself for the first time, but it and the cuddle still somehow made Andrew feel happy as if he’d done something right for once.
Maddie hugged him for a moment more before letting him go, giving his head one more affectionate pat and stood back up. She realized something and blushed “Oh! I’m sorry… I know all of you but I’m fairly sure I didn’t tell you my name. I’m Maddie Tunderana. It’s very nice to meet all of you.” She said with a smile. Kimmie giggled at this as Sammi and Petie tried to wrap their mind around what had just happened. She’d somehow given Andrew functioning battle advice… by referencing her experiences taking care of toddlers. It just didn’t compute for them. “Now.” She said smiling to the teddiursa and dratini “I believe you had a few issues about how to better take hits… and if it’s okay I’d like to talk to you about the way you should treat your friends…”
***********
An hour or two later after the training session had finally ended, more or less on a high note despite Sammi’s reaction, and Maddie was getting ready to leave the gym after waving bye to Andrew. Janus met her at the gym door, the houndoom looking to her with a stern gaze "...Tell meh somethin', lass. Why'd yeh go 'n stick yer nose on other folks' business jus' like that?" she blinked at the question and blushed "... I just... well..." looks away timidly "I kinda wanted to help... and since she sounded like the upset toddlers I have to deal with back home... I though I might be able to..."
Janus stroked his horns at this "...It 'aint goin' t' 'elp. Maybe she's shut up now, but I swear on m' grave that bitch is goin' t' go crazy again soon." She edged away from him slightly, not liking the way the conversation was going "... well... I'll at least try..." still looking away, shifting a little timidly "To help I mean... they seem like nice mon...." Still being surprisingly pleasant, for him at least, Janus looked to her "...Four of 'em might, but sure as 'ell is there a rotten berry amongst 'em, an' th' 'ell am I goin' t' let 'er be th' anchor tha' sinks th' team."
Listening to that it gave Maddie a little relief; at the least the houndoom seemed to have the team’s best interest at heart in his own way "Um... well... I've managed to help problem kids back at the orphanage from time to time..." giving Janus a soft, timid look "May... may I please try to help here before you go and do anything... rash?” At that he just slung his bag over his shoulder and turned away from her "...Yeh'll fail. Mark m' words." He said and then headed down the hall without even a goodbye.
Watching him go Maddie stood and mulled over what had just happened. It had all been so fast, almost like playtime back at the orphanage when all the children ran wild. Surprisingly enough she’d had fun helping them. Maybe it was because they were enough like the little kids she was used to that they made her comfortable or maybe she just had a talent for this but she’d actually enjoyed it… maybe there was something to this coaching thing.
“Hmmm… I wonder if Andrew will let me be the teams official coach?” she asked herself softly, finding herself really hoping he’d say yes and eager to ask him next time she saw him, before realizing the fact that the pichu was standing right next to her “Oh!!” she gasped, jumping a little before managing to regain her composure and smile down to the furiously blushing pichu “I thought you’d left for home?” she asked. Andrew blushed more “I k-kinda… f-forgot my b-back pack..” he said shouldering the snorlax shaped school bag and standing there for a minute blushing intensely before taking a deep breath “Chuuuuuuuuuuuuu…. I g-guess it’s o-okay…” he says finally “W-we need all t-the help w-we can g-get… a-and your n-nice at l-least. He admitted, squeaking as he found himself scooped up and snuggled against her, head resting on her shoulder like an infant as she giggled and cuddled him in joy “Ooooooooooh thank you sweetie! I promise I’ll take good care and help you and your friends!” she gently kissed his cheek in a motherly fashion as Andrew blushes so much his pink cheek circles seemed to triple in size. He couldn’t help but wonder if he’d just agreed to have a coach or ended up getting a babysitter for his team… Sammi was so gonna be furious at him…
