If the portrait comes with a Blink and then a action, Would it be possible too change the eye color just as they blink? cause I was thinking going from a blue eye happy look. and as they blink and reopen the eye is red and he gives a toothy grin.
If not I would go with the option of them possibly looking towards and letting out a cold breath/huff.

As for the portrait animation, how about something like sort of like my FA portrait. https://www.furaffinity.net/view/41409615/ (full view for closer inspection) Side view, see the viewer, then leaning the head/rotation to have both eyes seeing the viewer, nice smile(Toothy smile or open mouth smile) and happy ear fins wiggle/or ear fins fanning out/perking up as though excitement at seeing the viewer. Am happy to give ideas on multiple ideas on what you might think might look best. Am also happy to hear your thoughts on any other suggestions that my ideas give you.

As for full 2D pose. The pose idea I had was the something similar to the Green Dragon from the SNES version of Final Fantasy 4 (FF2 is the American version) FF4 is my most favorite final fantasy game and I thought it would be fun to be in something similar to the pose of the Green dragons you face in Final Fantasy 4. :D
Also, all things mentioned here are for suggestion purposes and aren't meant to be as is or required. Only ideas and concepts for you to work with. I understand that some things might not fit the space requirements.

For the Animation I can see his eyes slowly drifting apart before going quickly snapping back to forward Probably slowly bleping before the tongue zips back into his mouth when he regains focus. Or even trying to lick his eye like most lizards do only to give up
