Madame Blackmask is the mentor and adoptive mother to Cole the Merchant, where he helps her as a wandering potion seller and secret witch.
After finding the young orphaned Cole at the bank of a river, bruised and bloodied from a scuffle with a bad crown he used to run with, Madame Blackmask nurses him back to health with herbs and potions she sells.
As she was the only person who was kind to him, Cole offers to stay with her and be an errand boy, potion tester, and bodyguard for her and her small traveling shop. Eventually, Cole is formally adopted by her and given the name "Blackmask".
Madame Blackmask, a former mage and adventurer herself, just so happens to know a few things about battle and takes the time to refine the young Cole into a more effective bodyguard.
