When I was little, I used to draw nothing but roller coasters and amusement park rides. I was afraid to ride almost EVERYTHING (including mild stuff, like the Tilt-a-whirl), but instead I would insisting on sitting in one spot and watching rides go through their cycles, sometimes 3 or 4 times per ride! (much to the chagrin of my parents!) Then I would immediately go home chock-full of inspiration and draw everything.
My early roller coaster drawings consisted of people that looked sort of like different sized "9"'s. (Think stick figures with colored in heads and one limb) Later, they evolved into actual people.
I came up with amusement park names, where they were located in my house, death tolls! I would even invent my own rides which, looking back, were probably a) not physically possible, b) fatal, and/or c) not very fun.
I'm still weirdly obsessed with carnival rides, especially old ones that involve being caged! I'm a lot braver now about what I ride, but unfortunately I'm a lot queasier!!!
This picture is from a WHILE ago, 3 sketchbooks ago, I resurrected it. I'm not too happy with it, but I won't tell you why. You might recognize some people here!

YOU'RE IN AN AMUSEMENT PARK, WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?
I love really old amusement park rides, but at the same time I feel a bit reluctant to ride them for the same reasons: they are rickety and old! (and sometimes painful) But at the same time, I don't want them to disappear from existence! It's a big catch 22.
Was it one of those smaller roller coasters??

I was always scared at those rides, watching them was sorta fun but being on them was a matter of emotional torture... so yeah I had tons of fun on those things 83 Ah~ I wish I had serious backstory behind my arts. You're so deep Scurrow <83.... *turns green with jealousy*
NICE!
I want to go to Knoebles SO BAD, because they're making a FLYING TURNS ride. The last place that tried to make a Flying turns was Six Flags in the 80's, adnd they commissioned Arrow to make it and it failed SO BADLY in the development stages that they had to convert it into a regular bobsled ride (Sarajevo Bobsleds). So yeah Knoebles has been working on making their own Flying Turns for 3-4 years, right now they're working on getting the cars right.
Oh god I'm a theme park nerd.ALSO have you seen my theme park tumblr? There's a music video about the history of the Phoenix on it! It's so deliciously cheesy! http://oldschoolthemeparks.tumblr.c.....chmeck-and-the

Wow, I didn't know they moved the phoenix from texas! I have a bunch of old school pamphlets from Six flags, I should probably scan those in. (They're from 88 and 89 I think) I remember that bobsled ride, did that have a track? That was an example of a ride I was way to scared to go on. I was at Knoeble's last year and I saw the flying turns ride getting built, I think they had to redo it a few times and start from scratch!
Dude SCAN IT :D :D :D
Bobsled rides don't have tracks, but the sleds are longer and slimmer than the flying turns rides. Flying turns traditionally have CRAZY drops and huge speed and such (and I'm such a coaster nerd that I'm all UGHHHH at wikipedia classifying them as exactly the same)

I'll ride anything once, unless I'm feeling sick. The last time I went to Busch Gardens I was developing a wicked cold and decided to skip out on their new supposedly awesome coaster. Sad times. I also enjoy the enclosed cage carnival type rides like the zipper. I was on a zipper once on which the cage didn't lock properly so the extra safety chain was the only thing keeping it closed, which left a gap that opened and slammed shut as the ride moved. Terrifying but awesome.
I went on the zipper ONCE, with my girlfriend at the time. I freaked out and started screaming like crazy (half joking), and then blamed it on her when we got off. It complete chaos, I don't think I could go on that again! But i love the way it looks.
I mean, really, it's a cage you are strapped into and spun in two different directions. From another perspective, the zipper could totally be a medieval torture device.

I used to make roller coasters also out of blocks and strap people to them (people meaning action figures and such) using rubber bands or twist ties, and I would plot out an invisible roller coaster track.
I also really liked seeing a dormant roller coaster or amusement park ride, because it would look so unassuming and then morph into a huge merciless beast when aroused!

I used to be all about rollercoasters. I was fearless as a little kid. My dad and I would go to tons of theme parks and ride all the most hideous looking rollercoasters and never get sick. For some reason I can't do that anymore. I got really nauseous the last time I was on rides and that kind of spoiled things for me.
Also: I have always thought bumper cars are the worst thing ever. I never liked the concept of them and was pressured riding in one once, much to my chagrin and embarrassment.

I remember going on this one ride, gave me a run for my money since it used LIM's for propulsion...that shit scares the piss out of me because you don't know when the jackass at the station is gonna hit that launch button...anyway it went from 0 to 75 and right at the start it takes a snapshot. once inside it's dark as hell, and you're in every possible twist and turn still at 75 MPH until you don't know which was is fucking up. it lasted about 30 seconds...anyway i was looking at the pics and i saw this one..this guy...just staring at the camera while his friends were screaming, he wasn't he was cool as a cucumber....i saw it and I thought.....THIS IS PHOTOBOMB!!!
