When I woke up it was from the door being opened. I sat upright to find no one in the room. I heard something. Footsteps. They seemed like they were getting closer. No one ever came to the door. The sound faded into the distance. And there was more. The sound of the air conditioner. The low hum of the security cameras in the room.
Oh no. More was changing. Now it was my ears.
I looked down at my body. I found no new changes. When I got to the bathroom and the mirror inside however, I found something staring me in the face.
The beginnings of a snout. My nose had now upturned completely, darkened slightly, and it felt like a different material than my normal skin. I touched it, and sure enough, it was wet. I sighed, and licked it.
I touched my ears. They did seem like they weren't sticking straight up like normal, and were now sagging slightly to the side, with slight points.
I looked down at my watch. It was 11 am. With no window in here, my mind felt off time wise. It was just as light in the room now as it had been last night.
That day I kept to myself. I was thankfully not being forced to do work for school, but I almost wished I had with nothing else to occupy my time but reading, internet browsing, and playing games. The only interruption was our daily check up. I was "healthy."
However, as I searched the internet, I came across something I'd been looking for. Something unpleasant. I'd searched with many different variations on things like dog virus, cancer treatment, and others. Now I finally found something. It was an article from Japan that I had to translate, talking about how people being observed in a clinic were experiencing "complications" from a cancer treatment that aligned right around when I was one year old. It could've been a coincidence, but things like "the clinic declined to give details" seemed to indicate to me what was going on.
If Dad was right about how all of this worked, and how far this treatment got, there were many people that would not be lucky enough to be supervised in a clinic. Instead they'd starting becoming more and more like a dog, and have no idea why.
By the time I went to bed, I noticed something new happening. I was itchy all over. My ears had also moved higher up on my head to the point that they looked really weird.
The whole day I didn't say a word to Jackie. Neither of us wanted to talk. Maybe we were just more tired of the situation than mad at each other at this point. No, I was still mad. I knew that I was not a very mature person, but it hurt when people lashed out with very specific insults.
With the lack of anyone to talk to beyond my mom when she'd visited, all there was to do was wait. Just lay there, alone, and wait.
