You have to appreciate Basil being a good friend here. I hope Laguna’s point of view of Basil changes over time and if not…..well we’ll just have to wait and see now won’t we? Truthfully of all the characters, Laguna gives off a bad vibe for me. I know Carolina says she needs him, but for him to tell her who her friends should be, that’s not healthy for anyone. Like I said though, we’ll just have to wait and see.
Well Laguna didn't exactly didn't give off signs of abuse, or even animosity toward Basil. All he asked her was "Who's the pig?" We just assume otherwise based on how Caroline acts when Basil talks about him. And Leguna wasn't exactly at all offended when Caroline asks him for Basil to stay for while at her place... I think people rely on what they see about heterosexual couples off of TV, Hollywood, academia, news media, and more recently social media. Those outlets can shape perception quite effectively.
