I think we tend to see ourselves the way we believe others see us. Judgments are like stains on a mirror that distort the way we perceive ourselves. Especially if they are expressed by someone of importance to us. Through art we can create a different image of ourselves which we don't need a mirror to look at, and while we may judge it objectively, it is rarely realistic. As you put it, it seems to me that for a second you would have managed to look at yourself as you would look at a piece of art: without a mirror. You would have judged yourself objectively and realistically. Very interesting, and probably near-impossible to achieve considering judgments are based on comparisons with ourselves.

It's actually not as hard to achieve as you might think, you just have to not be trying to do it, at all. If you try and create a compelling and 'real' story character, one that you are deeply invested in, regardless of how different the character may be in his creation and form, you may find that, in the end, you were merely putting yourself slowly onto the pad.

It's an unsettling and unpleasant moment when you realize it though, as depending on who you are, your most treasured creation can quickly turn into your most hated mistake.
