As he passed the front of the antique shop, Regdeh’s eye was well and truly caught. He hated to live up to the avian stereotype of loving shiny things, but come on, the pendant was gorgeous! Not to mention it was moulded in the shape of an ankh. It would be absurd not to take it. Not to mention that perfectly cut emerald set right in the middle of the loop at the top.
The hoopoe psyched himself up to be let down; he was sure the ankh was going to be way too expensive, but It couldn’t hurt to inquire. He went straight into the musty shop, seeing a moustachioed skunk behind the counter. He was rotund, warm-looking, with little purple highlights in his monochrome fur. It was odd to see someone that age with a bit of dye in his fur, but in a good way.
“Sorry to bother you,” Regdeh said sheepishly, “But I was wondering if that ankh in the window is still available?”
“Of course it is. Would you care to try it on?” The skunk was staring at him very intently, smiling all the while. His eyes were a very bright green, and his tone was very polite, and pleasant. But something in the orange-plumed bird’s stomach clenched. He pushed the nerves down.
“Erm… s-sure?” Regdeh laughed nervously. He gave the skunk a wide berth as the shopkeeper stepped out from behind the counter and approached the window. He was wide, with a very girthy stomach that strained at his shirt. He hadn’t seen the skunk’s tail before, and now he understood why.
It was short, squat, and ringed with stripes. More of a raccoon tail than a skunk tail.
“Here you are, my good friend,” the skunk said. The ankh was placed in Regdeh’s hand. It was even more beautiful up close. The cord tied around it was so subtle as to be invisible. He looked back to the skunk again, up into those green, those purple, those green eyes. He only just noticed the skunk was wearing a pendant identical to his...
“M-may I?”
“Put it on.” it sounded like a command more than an order.
“O-okay then…”
When he slipped the cord over his head and the ankh made contact with his chest, it stuck to him. The emerald shone and sparked. His body arched as it expanded, no longer his own to command. His clothing tore away, unable to withstand or contain the girth. Regdeh didn’t scream. He moaned with pleasure.

“Wow, it’s beautiful!” Duski yapped as he stared at Regdeh’s chest, and at the glimmering pendant hanging off it. The blue-furred deer-corgi hybrid was staring at it with polite interest. He was pointedly not trying to pass comment on anything else. Like the fact that Regdeh now seemed to have a raccoon tail with a tip like an emerald ball. Or that he had green highlights in his plumage and along his fingertips, shining like acrylic nails. Or that he’d seemed to have put on a few dozen kilos since the last time Duski saw him.
“You look…” Duski took a moment to try and find the right words. “Really… cool!”
“Thank you, Duski.” Regdeh smiled. That was another thing about him that was strange. His tone of voice was a little less excitable, and a lot more formal and polite. It was very very odd. Duski had already put two and two together, but he was far too polite to do anything more than play along.
“Would you like one of your own?” Regdeh asked Duski. “The man had so many of them, I couldn’t help but buy a few.”
“Heck, that’s v-very nice of you to offer,” Duski said with a nervous little titter. “But I don’t think I’d be able to rock it the same way you d...do…”
Regdeh was holding up another ankh, swinging it before the deer-corgi’s eyes. He couldn’t help himself. His eyes followed it back and forth in its short, quick arc. He was too well conditioned to pendants already. His last little word didn’t escape his throat, as he gazed at the pretty, shiny, dangling pendant. His tail was already wagging sluggishly, a pavlovian response to being put into a trance.
“Ahh…” he whined softly, his lips curling into a smile as he began to pant. “Hhh…”
“Shhh,” Regdeh said, but his voice was no longer his own. It was a deep, low, warm rumble, layered over the top of the hoopoe’s normal voice. “No words. Just relax and stare and let yourself fall.”
His eyes began to swirl with rings of purple and green, framed just behind the swinging pendant.
“Hhhheeeck…” Duski moaned, his own eyes taking on the same swirling sheen. The ankh’s arc slowed and shortened until it was simply resting its tip just on the tip of Duski’s snout. The deergi stared, cross-eyed at it. The tip of the ankh touched his nose, and it turned from black flesh into a shiny, polished gem.
All that was left to do was drape the ankh around the puppy’s neck to seal his fate. As soon as that happened, Duski writhed and groaned with pleasure, his clothes falling away as his gut and thighs expanded with extra padding. His wagging puppy tail changed to a swishing raccoon’s plume. The little antlers on his head changed from bone to translucent green stone. He was feeling heavier all over, even down below, all as his woozy expression changed to a wicked, knowing smirk. It matched the smile on the hoopoe’s face.
“Hello, me,” “Regdeh” said.
“Hello to you too, me…” “Duski” responded.
“Now hold still, I’ve got to decorate myself.”

This part was Onaka’s favourite part. Once he’d placed a bit of his soul inside a new vessel, the next thing to do was brand them and make them a little bit unique. Using “Regdeh’s” finger, traced a long spiral along the soft white fur of “Duski’s” stomach. The arc widened until the whole front was covered in shining green paint. All the while, Onaka looked into his own swirling eyes. His smile looked good on the puppy’s face, as did his colours.
“It suits you,” Onaka said to his new vessel. “You’ll be ruining some poor mortal’s mind in no time at all.
“Thank you,” Onaka said to his old vessel. “I very much look forward to it.”
