Yesterday marked the last day of US military presence in Afghanistan.
20 years. 20 years of US presence ended with a shambled effort of pulling out reminiscent to the Fall of Saigon in 1975. All for the sake of "preserving Democracy". 20 years of supposed "nation-building" leading up to - you guessed it - nothing.
The events leading up to the catasthrope of which the country is in now, is what inspired me to do this for the last two weeks. This artwork represents the fallen soldiers who died for nothing, for pointless wars abroad, being airlifted to their respective countries.
The title is Russian for "Black Tulip" - a nickname for Soviet An-12s (depicted in the background) carrying the dead back to their homeland. The same thing would be the best describing the US C-17 Globemaster III in the foreground, loading its last caskets to send back home.
Soviet, nor American. they just had to leave Afghanistan alone. It is and would probably be living up to its name of "Graveyard of Empires".
My heart goes to all the people involved, especially the Afghan people who would endure yet another Taliban rule. All because of the fact that empires tried to conquer their land for centuries.

Seeing the US soldiers as occupiers, the Afghan government rather rightfully seen as being absurdly corrupt and not worth defending, loyalties being entirely local. Afghanistan is kind of the perfect storm of being completely impossible not to conquer, but to occupy. It outlasts you.
