There had been a frighteningly powerful storm lately, and about six or seven trees had sadly been blown over at the park. During my walk I checked the masses of downed tree to see if I could find any kite parts. Of course I did manage to find the sad, destroyed remains of a kite, and salvaged a spar and keel from it. Then in one of the branch clusters I spotted a small gray object with propellers.
IT WAS A DRONE!!!!
I was hoping I would find one! It seemed possible, as they will occasionally find their way into trees when flown by an unskilled pilot, and one just might fall from a tree at some point later during a storm.
I must confess, I did a happy coyote dance!
Although one of the drone's propeller arms was broken, it looked like it had not been outside to long, and it had a video camera! Hopefully it's SD card would still work, and contain crash footage!
When I got home I removed the SD card from the drone, and was pleasantly surprised that it was a 26 megabite SD card! If it worked, not only would I have epic drone crash footage, but I would have a really nice SD card to! I gently plugged the SD card into my computer, and it worked!! The files consisted of a lovely aerial photo of the park, then a whopping 50mins of footage of a tree until the drone's battery ran out! Unfortunately the actual crash had not been recorded, so that was a disappointment. The good news was that the files revealed the crash date as being only six days and one storm earlier, and I might be able to get the drone to fly again! It was at this time, since the drone was obviously an important object and quite expensive, and although I am a coyote I knew that attempting to return the drone to its original owner would be the right thing to do, so I began searching the files for any identification of the previous owner. Unfortunately/fortunately I came up negative, as the SD card had been empty when it had been put in the drone, and it only contained the tree footage. I guess it is time to identify the drone and reap the direct rewards of the salvage.
It was a DJI Mini 2, a drone the value of which I will not disclose.
Needless to say, I was speechless, and the drone is of such high quality that I am actually ordering replacement parts to see if I can get it to fly again instead of scrapping it for its electronic components!

Surely if you actually wanted to find the owner you could invest a little more effort. Maybe put up signs, and ask anyone who contacts you for a description of the drone and timeline of the loss.
Think of how sick the original owner feels having lost his drone. And you're celebrating. Sick man.

You have to use an app from DJI on a phone to fly it, so DJI presumably knows at least the phone number or email address of the person who flew it last. They may also know the serial number of the drone itself (which is probably also marked on the drone somewhere - it might be under a hatch, behind the battery, etc, but it should be there). I don't know if DJI provides this service, but if you contact them and say "I found a Mini 2, serial number 123456", they should have the ability to pass your information along to the person who flew it last.
Or, as has been said, put up some signs in the park. They don't have to be fancy - an 8.5x11" printed sheet is fine. The owner should be able to tell you what the footage was. If the owner still has the original box/paperwork the drone came with, that stuff might also have the serial number marked on it, which would be another way to verify that it's the right person.

You might look on Reddit to see if there's a group for either your city, or your part of the state, and post about it there. There are groups on Reddit for lots of areas, but some of them don't get much traffic - check the dates on the existing posts to see. Sometimes your post will get more visibility if you post in the group for the nearest large metro area.
I don't use Facebook but I understand they also have local and regional groups. That might also be a place to try. If you don't have a Facebook account, maybe ask a friend that has one if they could post for you.

Thats a really expensive toy. And considering its arms were folded when you found it, that means it fell out of someones bag on their way home. Theres someone out there right now beating the hell out of themselves for losing that drone. Judging from the stickers on the sides of it, its probably brand new.
I am going to continue searching for the owner until the end of the month. I am used to finding simple toys like bath time boats and kites. I have never experienced finding something like this before and how to proceed is a learning curve. I would like to thank everyone who is helping me through this process. I am doing everything I can, but have extremely little information to go by, having now checked the manufacturer's site and local model aviation forums but still came up empty.
The post was made during the excitement of the original find, but now I understand that this may be an extremely important item, and every effort should be made to return it.
