I got some suggestions that I should tidy up my cell shading a bit if I were to do this style in a comic format- so I did this quickly (under an hour) to test out a cleaner technique. Thoughts?
Also wanted to make sure that the characters from 12yrs looked alright together and looked alright with the style of shading I'm using! This will probably be the style I use for the comic.

Left to right: Hawthorne, Kujija, Shia, Xianghe &12yrs belong to me.

Hmm I prefer the other style, imo it looks better, and seems more refined. The style in this picture seems awkward for me due to being cell shaded but having more than 3 tones (shadow, mid, highlight) and the transitions between the tones are very sharp (this is very apparent to the character on the left). In my opinion it is very distracting, it would look better if the shading was simplified more, or make the transition much softer by blending, whichever you think will work for you.
Alright! I think I definitely understand. Doing the kind of cross-hatching-blending-stuff I did in the other picture I think definitely helps with the transitions; it's a bit sketchier as well! Going with your suggestions I think I will try to simplify the shading overall and then go super-sketchy-crazy for intense scenes. Thank you so much for the feedback! It was really helpful. :D
Alrighty! :D Thank you so much for the feedback! Most of the comic is lighthearted at this point (with some potential for heavier themes later on- if the pilot goes well I'll continue with the series, if the pilot does badly.. maybe I'll move on!). For the lighthearted bits I may go with a simpler version of this style, and for the heavier bits I may use a bit of the other style that's a bit more sketchy/artsy. :) Thank you so much again! It's really helpful.
