Let Me Tell You About The Coolest Thing Ever
Just unbelievably good art by
Jaqrabbit. This may be the most personal piece of art I've ever bought.
And furthermore, while many of the more academic analyses of the Godzilla lore tend to fixate upon the ways in which the character has shifted from hero to villain and back again over the years, there is something I find far more interesting. That is, the ways in which the symbolism of Godzilla as a stand in for nature, natural forces, and oftentimes the earth itself shift alongside those "heel-face" turns throughout the canon and often relate directly or indirectly to contemporary events such as the ecological themes in Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971, dir. Yoshimitsu Banno), Godzilla vs. Gigan's (1972, dir. Jun Fukuda) depiction of the often predatory nature of marketing to children, and the nuclear threat of the 80's in The Return of Godzilla (1984, dir. Koji Hashimoto).
And the movies are all big and loud and violent and silly and all the monsters have really cool designs.

I'll actually be a slight devil's advocate and say that Godzilla '98 is a serviceable, if not especially noteworthy action movie. However, by veering too far from the source material, not only in design but also in changing the overall theme from a comment on man's insignificance against the sheer, incomprehensible power of nature into "not another Roland Emmerich flick where he fellates the military for 90 minutes;" it basically lacks any of the things that make Godzilla what it is. Therefore while I find the film entertaining for the overblown action schlock that it is, I cannot consider it a Godzilla movie.
