"The great, white lion gazed down upon the small, dark cub as he gawked in awe at the distant specks of colour; herds going about their morning ritual. "The duties of the Lion King and his Guard are to ensure the fragile balance of nature is maintained," Dakarai continued, his voice warm but with a stoic strength to it. "To respect all creatures regardless of size or strength. To hear their needs and do our best to answer them. And protect them."
Slowly, Jabari's eyebrows knitted together. "Protect them? From.. hunters? But, da-durrr, Dak-ah, aha, sir, I mean." A sheepish grin stretched across his muzzle. The great white lion could not help but feel his heart sink. The boy was still so uncertain of himself and what affection was reasonable. What HAD they done to him...? "Don't... WE... hunt the animals too?"
Ahh. The same question he himself asked as a cub. "Mhmm," Dakarai nodded. "But you see, all animals need to eat. Our duty is never to deny the starving their right to sustenance. But there are those who seek only to consume in excess. To take and take from others without giving back. A bull who refuses to share a watering hole during the dry season. A leopard who hunts only rare animals for the flickering thrill of taking lives with ease. Even lions, who believe themselves to be the greatest of all the beasts and above the laws. To protect the Circle of Life... is to be able to put aside the world as you might initially see it, and act for the betterment of all creatures who live in it. THAT... is our responsibility."
Dakarai's gaze settled onto Jabari, before he tilted his head. "It's a great responsibility," he said, "to be come Lord of the Guard."
"..and I'm ready to learn." Even the Lord was taken aback by the quiet, strong reserve in Jabari's voice, still absorbing the sight of the kingdom at sunrise with wonder.-
"...then I will teach you."
