So, just in case this isn't rhetorical: it's called the negativity bias. It's an evolutionary defense mechanism that's supposed to help us keep aware of bad things or dangerous things to avoid. But, these days, the negativity bias can actually be a maladaptive trait instead. There's a popular joke that "we are all being chased by very slow tigers." So instead of thinking "hey those mushrooms are poisonous, we should remember that," it becomes something else.
