The Trebuchet launch day was a success! Nothing hurt, nobody broken. :) Generally went pretty well! There were a few mis-fires where it went up or slightly backwards, basically the projectile was rolling out of the sling before the sling opened. We should be able to fix that pretty easy. But overall it was amazingly accurate, or at least deterministic. Given a set of shot-filled tennis balls, it dropped them in the same general five yard area each time.
And yes, we exploded a couple melons too. :)

There is a little T-shaped latch at the end connected to the main beam. After rising above a certain angle, one of the carybiners holding the sling slips off the T-shaped latch and allows the sling to open up. Since there's no more centripetal force on the target, it'll fly out ideally at a 45 degree angle (optimal distance angle with no air drag).
The "white smoke" is actually water... :P We actually loaded some water-balloons for initial firing tests, but centripetal force during launch is too great and crushes the balloon. This shot in particular is the balloon deflating white letting out a bunch of water. It actually gets some height, but not a lot of distance.
