My Gerbil! He died recently :( I miss him. He was very pretty, and cranky like me.
Blah.. stupid rodents and their lack of logevity... -_-;;

I had one, I called him Scabs because I adopted him from a woman who said he burned his head on his heat lamp, I had him for a few months, but my grandmother threatened never to visit us again until I got rid of it.
My grandmother's word was powerful enough with my parents to make me adopt Scabs out to a friend.

I have become rather desensitized to pet death... well, for the most part, anyway. Sometimes it just hits me really hard and sudden. Sometimes A pet I barely knew will hit me really hard.
I can't be without pets, though. I love their company, and I've had pets all my life. I feel very empty without a little furry creature around. ^_^
I just keep telling myself that death is part of life.. *sigh* ^_^; Sometimes it helps

A very cute boi, and a wonderful tribute. I know what you mean about short lived rodents - BeastInShow and I used to have gerbils, but they are so tragicaly short lived.
Peromyscus, the deer mouse (native to the US) has a mean lifespan of about 8 years. They are used in aging research since they live so long, and are commercially available.
Ball pythons live around 30 - 40 years, which means that when one dies, he or she has been an old friend - but this doesn't happen often.
Small breeds of dogs (eg., pugs), live much longer than large breeds.

Oooh, Deer mice.. Now that's something I didn't know. Snakes.. well, I'd love to keep a large snake, but I really don't have the room to keep one happy as it grows up.. and as for dogs? Well, I'm sadly not a big fan of smaller dogs. They're cute, but not for me.
I can say one thing about dogs, though.. My preference is for a nice Mutt.. Purebreeds, as pretty as they may be.. well.. those gene pools tend to be a bit shallow, I find.. and that just makes for a lot of hell..
Despite the pain, give me a few good years, and in the end, I'll be happy, even if I'm sad.
But yeah, good advice all around ^_^
