This was hard. Not drawing it or anything like that. In the end I went for a really simple and quick drawing that I didn't think needed anything added.
The problem is, this favourite place of mine isn't real. What was so hard about this task was that I couldn't think of a favourite place.
Do I like the large nature filled park that my family would come to all the time when I was a kid? I like it but, not because of something unique to it. I like nature so I like it, just as much as I like any other park. It's not special, it just has grass and trees.
Do I like the local cinema? no I like the films that it shows.
Do I like this particular castle for its majesty? Maybe but it almost feels irrelevant.
The fact is, to me, where i am doesn't matter. The middle of the street is no different to my own bedroom. The real world, the physical bricks, mortar and dirt do not matter to me.
So where is this place that I've drawn?
It's the malleability of a place that can be turned into a personality. The earth with a voice. It's fantasy.
Mostly it's the setting of Dear Esther. A mod for Half Life 2 that got a lot of media attention for good reason.
It was almost a dream world. Not real. The world itself twisted and turned into fantasy to create something that literally talked to you.
My favourite place is both in my mind, and the artistic creations of others.
I love unreality. That's my favourite place.
