Probably the best move to be honest. As written, the adventure is all "he asks for anyone to challenge him to a duel" when it's clear that at 1st level he'd wipe the floor with the party. Even in the updated release they make you 2nd level when he issues the challenge, but even then he's a fighter with improved critical, multiattack, and action surge. No level 2 character can beat him 1 v 1.
