Chapter III
Wolf's responsibility starts
"I don't believe this." Wolf said as he and Melissa sat down on the couch, "I really don't believe this!"
He placed his head into his hands in an attempt to sink in what Melissa had just told him.
"Believe it, sweetheart." Melissa said as she sat down, "He's your son. I have his birth certificate a few days after I gave birth to him at Corneria City hospital."
"If he's my son," Wolf said, "Why is he speaking to Fox and Krystal? The O'Donnells and McClouds are suppose to be rivals and enemies, not friends."
"Because he's not like you at all." Melissa replied, "He's kind and good-hearted, but he needs you. Fox and Krystal are rarely home because they have to carry on missions they are hired to do. He needs his father."
Melissa took ahold of his hand and held it. Wolf got up and glanced at the backyard through the large window. He watched Adam, talking to Fox and Krystal.
"What did you tell him?" Wolf asked while trying to control the anger boiling inside of him, "What did you tell that boy about me?"
"I told him you were a good person who made wrong decisions in your life." Melissa said, "He knows you're his father."
Wolf took a few deep breaths. His teeth were bared, but his lips were sealed shut.
"When did you find out you were going to have a pup?" Wolf asked
"You remember when you and I got drunk that night while celebrating your graduation from the Cornerian Flight Academy?" Melissa asked, "You and I were both 21."
Wolf looked at her and shook his head.
"The day after the night when we screwed around in bed." Melissa resumed, "I found out I was pregnant with him. I was scared to tell you at first. I'm sorry, Wolf. I should've told you this from the beginning."
"Why didn't you tell me this before?" Wolf asked while still trying to hold his anger inside
"I wanted to," Melissa said with tears forming in her eyes, "but when I summed up the courage to tell you, you left."
"I left to find a way to financially support the two of us as soon as we got married." Wolf told her, "I had to take Andross's offer because of the money."
He placed his hands on her shoulders.
"I'm not mad at you." Wolf said as he embraced her, "but I want to do a paternity test with your consent. I just want proof from a doctor that I am his biological father."
"Okay." Melissa replied
Wolf slid his arms around her and embraced her. She laid her head under his neck and wept.
"It's all right." He said to her quietly, "It's all right. I love you."
He kissed the top of her head and held her tightly. She stopped crying a few minutes later, then they walked back out to the backyard to rejoin the party (although Wolf had to promise Melissa that there would be no fighting between himself and Fox).
About two hours later, Wolf returned to his apartment and laid down on his couch to sink in what has happened throughout the night. His eyes were fixed and staring at the ceiling. During the party, he saw alot of children play with their parents, so maybe starting a bond with Adam wouldn't be a bad idea. The reason why him and children never mixed well was because of his former reputation as a brutal and ruthless space pirate and leader of Fox's rival team. After seeing children play with their fathers at the city park and beach over the past couple of weeks, he also wondered why couldn't he have that same kind of relationship with his own father. All he remembered was seeing his father drive away with a young female stripper in his pickup truck when he was just a six-year-old pup, leaving him alone with his mother in a very poor neighborhood part of Corneria City. He didn't want Adam to go through the same thing. He also remembered seeing the house next door was for sale, so seeing it then buying it would also be a good idea.
"Enough is enough." Wolf thought as he grabbed the phone from off the side table and called Melissa.
"Hello." Melissa said
"Melissa? Hi." Wolf greeted her, "It's Wolf."
"Hey, Wolf." Melissa replied, "What's up? It's almost 11pm."
"I'm gonna start spending time with Adam and you." Wolf said to her, "What are you doing tomorrow?"
"I'm going out with some friends in four days." Melissa replied, "So, that's a good start"
"All right." Wolf replied, writing the time down on a piece of paper. "Even if the test results show I'm not the father, I'd like to be his father-figure."
"He'd like that." Melissa said
He exchanged 'goodnights' with her then hung up the phone. He then sat back up and turned on the television to the 11pm news.
