Sometimes your ball blows away on the beach. Sometimes you chase after it a little too far. Sometimes a big pelican swoops down and thinks you're a snack. Sometimes, then, there's nobody to stop you from being one. It's amazing how quickly your lower body can be scooped into a beak, and once you start down that slimy slide, it's awful hard to stop yourself without grabbing onto something..

Even big dumb birds need food, after all. You think that thing is thinking "gee, this is a living person with thoughts and feelings and an existence that should be worth more than being lunch, but I don't care about any of that, I'm okay with ending someone's life to fill my belly"? Nah. It's just thinking "food!". And once that pesky wiggly snack loses its grip and gets gulped down, the bird's gonna take off and find someplace nice to roost while its meal twitches, goes still, and digests.
