Given that my cat is a mad scientist, he could probably avoid the confrontation all together using one of his many gadgets, either by pausing time, phasing through the wall/floor/ground where this would be happening, leaving the area faster than the eye can detect, becoming invisible... well, you get the idea.
...then again, he wouldn't typically be one to put himself in that situation. Not on purpose, anyway...
