High up in the mountains of the Island, there rests a small mountain village. Within this village are a group of dogs very valuable to the village's culture and way of life. For lack of a proper name (for now), these dogs are referred to as Sacred Dogs.
This village views these dogs as sacred animals. Every person born into the village is matched up with a puppy from this breed. The human child and the puppy grow up together. It is believed that these dogs are the soul mates to humans and are far more than just simple animals. Of course, not everything lasts forever and the dogs do die before the human does. But unlike the large dogs of Earth, these dogs have long life spans, going for 20-30 years. During this long life span, the dogs look after their human companions, becoming the ultimate baby sitter. And when a couple in the village marries, essentially, their dogs become married as well. Any offspring produced by their dogs will be given to their children, starting with the first born usually getting the pick of the litter, and so on.
When a dog dies, the village treats it as if a human dies. It is a sad occasion and a small ritual in the place of a funeral takes place. Even though the dogs have physically passed, it is believed that their spirits linger on to continue protecting their humans. From the animal's body, a charm of some sort is constructed from their bones and a drop of blood is placed inside. It is believed that this physical trinket made from the animal helps the dog's spirit locate their human.
These dogs are physically based off a St. Bernard. Their colors range from white to dark grays. They can be one solid color or their fur can come in colored patches or speckled like above. They're extremely fluffy and have large paws built like snow shoes so they don't sink into the snow.
