I dunno about this advice. Yeah, if you wanna do lazy comic-style art (like, say, zaush), then that works fine. Not that there's anything wrong with that, I do love Zaush's work.
However, if you ever want to do kickass realistic work like say Nimrais or even Blotch, you're gonna have to get used to drawing this much and more.
In the meantime, I think this particular style works really well. The lines really give the fur definition. I could see making them lighter, but definitely not fewer.

Well, okay, yes.... but we're not doing paint here. >.<
Besides, in the end, you're still conveying the same lines whether it be through ink or paint. Knowing where to put the marks is the hardest part, even if the result is sometimes gaudy. The rest is refining how you do it.
