CCXCVI: "Worried" is an Understatement
<<< PREV | FIRST | NEXT >>>
This scene digs through a fair bit of continuity. Noah mentions Cass’ second transformation, which happened on this page. The transformations Katsuko references happened on this page and this page. Whereas Cass and Flint felt no pain during their first transformations to the point of sleeping almost all the way through them.

I can understand Cass is fed up with her DNA being violated, and just wants it DONE WITH... but this scheme is still a bit creepy. I don't suppose they have a brain scan gizmo handy to copy over her brainwaves and just reinsert them afterwards just in case she suffers personality death?
This has me all kinds of interested. So much theory crafting going on in my head.
You have two aspects that she hasn't really considered in my opinion. The rapid hair growth isn't accounted for. It doesn't make sense for the human or capra DNA to be doing that. It must be some secondary program running in the nanites to "repair" the body. And they are better at it than anyone can predict.
The other aspect is age. The nanites don't change people into "baby" versions of these animals. Dna has instructions for how things grow sort of but a lot of that is enviroment. So the nanites would need a working understanding of it.
I wouldn't worry about memories, as they are stored in a surprisingly small area of the brain. And your personality is based on reactions to memories, built over time. If the nanites can read those memories to "rebuild" the brain based off those memories just as it does the rest of the body not reverting to a child animal.... It could theoretically rebuild a personality as well.

There's also the fact that, in this universe, goats and squirrels display striking levels of intelligence. Cass and Flint have both conversed with them. Especially Flint. All these conversations have been in "goat" and "squirrel," but they apparently translate. So... Maybe Cass really doesn't face as big a neurological change as they fear.
