On my recent vacation, I got up rather early one morning after a very strange dream. After firing off a couple of messages to American friends, I noticed that it was early enough that if I ventured down to the nearby beach, I might catch the sun rising. So, after pulling some clothes over my pyjamas (to protect my dignity from the seabirds and rabbits), I headed down the cliffside path to the shoreline. Already, the sky was illuminated by our star’s rays, producing an atmospheric rainbow over all of Western Europe. It soon outshone the lights from the various cargo ships and oil tankers docked in the English Channel, awaiting clearance to the ports on England’s southern coast: Southampton and Portsmouth. Over a silhouetted cliff, the sun made itself known to the world, and I was very glad to have my camera at the ready.
