Their story is a long one not really for here. But to narrow it down, let's just say Gawgi (green alien), who upon being murdered was embedded with a magical source called the Omega Stone, that's what the gaping crack in his chest is. His insides are a void of white, and iridescent light, his visible bones, turned crystallized (purple and blues). Possibly immortal he's been unchanged for over 50 years while normally he would be a wrinkled elder by now. Now embedded with the most sought after source of mystical power in the universe, he is constantly on the run and diving into adventures all the while trying to figure out what to do with it, the powers it gives him, and his fate during and after. He just wants a normal life, but a lot was pressed on his shoulders without him asking.
As for The Pirate King, he was the one to ruthlessly track down the Omega Stone hundreds of years ago, there was a fight amongst his crew for its power and... something happened around the stone that made it go off... they all disappeared. Or so it seemed until Gawgi's crew discovered they were very much still around, just not in the way anyone would expect. I can't say what happened at this moment, but much like how the Omega Stone was embedded into Gawgi, the Pirate King was embedded into his coat and hat. The pirate crew suffered something similar.
The Pirate King was physically and soulbound to Gawgi unintentionally, he cannot speak, but it is clear he wants the stone for some reason of his own, perhaps to be brought back. He protects the lad, giving the pilot his fighting prowess and enables the alien to fly, amongst other things. It is a mutual relationship as he is as weak as his fibers, needing a person of flesh and bone to defend the stone and himself from his former crew and those new who seek it today. The Pirate King can only be seen in the light of the stone, but only as a shadow of himself.
