well, there are multiple reasons actually... for once, Far Cry 2 did have no story.
sure, you were supposed to go after the weapon dealer Jackal and the intro looked very promising... but what happens throughout most of the game? you go to a guy from one of two factions to get a mission that has nothing to do with finding the jackal. a mission is "go there, kill this or kill that" and that's it. does it have something to do with finding the jackal? no... are you getting any clues or is anything contributed to the actual story of the game? no...
and what about the factions? UFLL and APR? who the hell are these guys? why do they fight and kill each other? what does UFLL or APR even mean? okay, APR might be African Peoples Republic or something like that, but it never is really explained, is it? likewise it is never really explained why they fight each other. and nobody of either the UFLL or APR mentions anything about the jackal, no help whatsoever.
respawning is also an awful issue. if you watched spoony's review of Far Cry 2 on thespoonyexperiment.com, he names the issue. "you kill the guards by the post and when you get far enough away, they instantly respawn. no delaying whatsoever. they respawn on the same day in the same hour." that's pretty bad... take Fallout 3 or Oblivion for example, where enemies take at least 3 days to respawn anywhere... that makes much more sense than the almost instant respawn.
and... well sorry, i for one cannot get over the fact that the game has no real story or plot for at least 95% of the game. the final 5% consist of the intro, a short chain of events in the middle of the game and about two or three missions in the end of the game.
the rest is just you going around killing random enemies... now i wouldn't mind doing that when i had the feel that i would accomplish something. in a good shooter, like Modern Warfare or the prequel Far Cry, the game takes you to much more diverse and changing landscapes and surroundings. likewise, you always get the feeling of accomplishing something, be it in Far Cry more and more getting an idea of what the hell is happening around you and in Modern Warfare, you keep on foiling a devious plan.
in Far Cry 2, you get nothing of that. no response whatsoever. you kill a DJ because of his radio show, you blow up some medicine, ambush a bunch of guys that were supposed to do... i don't what... no matter... regardless what you do, nothing has any actual impact on the game. the world of Far Cry 2 never changes, everyone around you acts the same, all the time, no changes whatsoever, no matter what you do. there just isn't any response... i could go blow up one of the towns and the guys in the other town wouldn't care. just shrug it off like they shrug off the assassinations of supposedly vital personal, blowing up of bridges, weapons, supplies, etc....
near the end, your mercenary partners betray you and try to kill you off... why do they that? what is their reason to do that? did you do something to piss them off? why didn't they contact you and ask if you wanna join them instead of just going to kill you? why did they just betray you and tried to kill you? i didn't understood it back then and i still don't get it today. why did they do that? it made no sense to me. which is even worse given that some of your former comrades who were supposedly killed in an attack are alive... why are they alive? did they strike a deal with the assaulting faction? did they escape? no explanation whatsoever.
another issue is that the game is downright boring... sure, the atmosphere is great... at first. but when you play for about an hour, you don't want to get into a car and drive around the landscape. you want to blow shit up and shoot bad guys! yet, you can't. you have to travel long distances, the shoot a bunch of guys, then your weapon falls apart, you get an malaria attack and everything around you starts to burn... and once you are done, you travel a long while back to base.
this bored me out of my scale and i always hated doing that.
i don't mind travelling long distances over the landscapes in a good RPG, like Fallout 3. but Far Cry 2 isn't an RPG. its a shooter. and in comparison to its predecessor, Far Cry... well... Far Cry 2 just sucks... sorry to say that. it is inferior to Far Cry on more than just one level.
and the sad truth is, a lot of people think likewise :-/
Far Cry 2 is pretty, but anything but great because there are plenty of other shooters, older, newer or the same age, that are just way better.

Christ. First off, this game is amazing. I actually just went back to playing it a month or so ago. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YplT0xW8HQA
Secondly. To all the people saying this game sucks. Those comments aren't helpful at all. They're just annoying. If you don't like the game. Don't comment. Not that hard is it?
