It was early morning, the sun barely peaking over the horizon. Kawa had just finished her breakfast and packed a snack for the road. Putting on a hiking backpack, the 190-year-old kitsune was ready for a new day. The green clothing she wore was uneven. The top half had a sleeve that extended all the way to a finger on her left hand, while it left her right shoulder exposed. The lower portion had the left pant leg barely covering her thigh, while the right pant leg went past her knee. A blue and green sash was tied around her waist, dangling down her right side.
Her body was covered in various shades of blue fur. Most of her body was covered in a pale-blue fur. Navy-blue fur covered her hands, knees, feet, and part of her split tail. A dark blue, almost black, fur covered her nose and part of her split tail. Sky blue fur covered part of her face, and some could be seen peeking out from under her clothing on her inner thigh.
She had rather complex fur patterns, even by kitsune standards. Then again, the only kitsunes she had ever met were her parents. On the navy and dark-blue parts of her tail and feet, patches of the pale blue fur are present. These patches were reminiscent of bubbles, floating upwards from deep underwater. On her face, the bubble pattern was more defined, looking like pale bubbles on the sky-blue fur. From her right shoulder, patches of green and yellow fur can be seen running partially down her arm and chest. These patches looked distinctively like leaves falling onto the surface of calm water. From the mess of short, blue hair sprouted two yellow and green tipped ears.
Kawa was excited to see that it looked like it would be a clear day as she walked to the local forest preserve. She loved to hike the paths, especially early in the morning when the dew was fresh. It was also a well-known spot for camping. Kawa would often meet new people who decided to camp in the area. As she started to enter the reserve, she wondered if she would meet someone new today. She always enjoyed meeting a new face. She always hoped against hope that she would meet a fellow kitsune there.
The split tailed kitsune merrily walked through the undergrowth, feeling the dew-covered ground under her feet. Coming across a small babbling brook, Kawa simply walked through the ankle-deep water. Before getting back onto dry land, she turned and kicked up some water, smiling to herself. She continued down the rarely used trail until she came to a clearing. In the center, she saw a figure lying on the ground.
It was an eastern dragoness wearing jeans and a t-shirt. She appeared to have lilac and black fur, with neon green hair that went from her head to the tip of her tail. She had two purple horns and long green whiskers. Her arms and the underside of her tail were covered in black scales. Her long tail was dotted with green and white points that looked like twinkling stars, with the green ones having lines connecting them to make them look like constellations. Their eyes were closed, as they seemed to be sleeping.
The curious kitsune approached the sleeping dragon. “Hello? Are you okay?” The dragoness barely stirred. Kawa get next to the dragoness and squatted down. She asked again. “Are you okay?” The dragoness finally seemed to wake. Her eyes slowly opened, revealing emerald-colored eyes. The mysterious dragoness sat up.
Stretching, the dragoness gave a large yawn. She looked around before noticing Kawa. When she did, she asked “What happened? Where am I?”
The concerned Kawa narrowed her brows in concern, “I was hoping you could tell me that. I just found you lying here in the middle of the clearing.” She stood up and offered a hand to the dragoness.
The dragoness got up without accepting the hand. She stood there, recalling what happened. “Ah, I remember now. I was lying out here, staring at the stars.” She looked up before continuing. “I must have fallen asleep while staring at them.” Turning now to the kitsune she apologized, “Sorry for worrying you.”
Breathing a sigh of relief, Kawa went “It’s alright.” Kawa then realized she hadn’t introduced herself. “Ah, my name is Kawa. I am a kitsune.” She moved her split tails to the side, in full view of the dragoness. “What is your name?” she asked in a cheery tone.
The dragoness responded with a monotone voice. “My name is Lyra.” Kawa being a kitsune didn’t seem to faze Lyra as it did with most people she met.
Not deterred by the aloof attitude, Kawa continued talking. “You must be hungry.” Digging in her hiking pack, she pulled out the bag of nuts and seeds she had prepped for a snack. “This is all I have; do you want some?”
Lyra was touched by the offer. “No, you can keep that. My tent is close by.” The dragoness raised a thumb and pointed behind her. “Just a short distance that way. It won’t take long to make breakfast.” Lyra then turned to leave, her whiskers and tail elegantly turning in response.
Kawa began to follow. “May I join you? I could help you with breakfast.”
Lyra began to wave Kawa forward. “Sure.”
When they arrived at Lyra’s tent, the dragoness asked Kawa to gather some wood while she set up the pot for some oatmeal. When Kawa returned with the wood, Lyra was ready for the wood, quickly putting it below the metal pot. Using her fire breathing, Lyra lit the pile to heat up the oatmeal and water. Kawa never liked campfires. The kitsune never really liked the smell of smoke.
As Lyra waited for her meal to be ready, she and Kawa made some small talk. “So, what were you doing walking through the forest this early?” The dragoness said while stirring the porridge.
“I like hiking, especially during the early morning to smell the fresh dew.” Kawa said. The kitsune moved to avoid the smoke getting into her eyes. “What about you?”
Without looking up from the pot, Lyra gave the obvious answer. “I enjoy camping.” After a short pause, Lyra continued. “I also like exploring new places. And I have yet to visit this nature preserve.” Taking the pot off the flame, she put the porridge in a bowl. “When I had the opportunity to visit, I jumped at the chance.”
Kawa watched as the dragoness added some fruits to the porridge. Kawa was becoming a little peckish herself and started dug into her snack. “What was the opportunity, If I may ask?”
“Oh, nothing important. Some just a small vacation with some friends.” Lyra started to eat her warm meal. In between bites, she explained that only one of the friends she was with enjoyed camping. Although they decided to not go camping this time. He got hooked replaying an old game and brought it along to play on their downtime. After finishing her breakfast, Lyra spoke up again. “It is kind of funny, how small the world seems sometimes.”
Kawa tilted her head, still munching on some nuts. “What do you mean by that?”
“You’re the third kitsune I’ve meet in like the last year. First Rao and then Cleo. It is like some poorly written plot.”
Kawa dropped her bag of nuts and seeds. “Two of your friends are Kitsunes!” Kawa got right in front of Lyra’s face. “Could you introduce me to them? Please!” Suddenly catching herself, Kawa gave Lyra some space. “Sorry. It’s just, I haven’t met any other kitsunes aside from my parents. I really want to meet some others.”
Lyra noticed the determined look Kawa had. Something about it made Lyra think she had to introduce Kawa to Rao and Cleo. “Alright, I’ll introduce you to them.” Kicking some dirt to extinguish the fire, the starry dragoness continued. “But on one condition. You help me take down the tent.”
Lyra brought Kawa to meet with the group. Kawa was a bit too hyped to finally meet other kitsunes to fully realize what a strange combination of the group was. Kawa chatted with Rao and Cleo for hours, occasionally addressing the others. Choco was the one who talked the least. The orange and black Squee remained cautious of the newcomer. A habit from the days she was a guard Squee for her colony. Despite this, everyone was enjoying the surprise guest’s company. Rao in particular seemed to enjoy Kawa’s company.
“I’ve never really seen you like this, Rao.” Dial said. The dark blue Protogen barely looked up from his game when he said that. His orange triangle eyes too glued to the game, his glass like tube tail twitching as he played. “She’s acting almost… sisterly.”
Arabella nodded her head “Yeah. I’ve seen many sides of Rao, but this wasn’t one of them.” The brown and cream-colored mutt was sitting with her arms behind her, holding her up. Her purple dress and pink undershirt combo adding contrast to her fur. Her grey eyes peaked out from under her short, brown hair.
Cleo took notice of the conversation, and joined in. “I am not surprised. I have seen Rao like this when we were younger, usually with younger kitsunes.” The black and grey dragon-kitsune hybrid was lying on her side. Her grey whiskers floating in the air, she continued. “I always believed Rao wanted a younger sibling. She would occasionally treat me like one, despite the fact I am about a year older than her.”
Lyra looked at Kawa and saw how big of a smile she had. She also noticed how big of a smile Rao had. “I guess it was a good thing that I brought her here.”
Fae decided to ask a question she thought might be relevant. “Rao, is there any way you might know Kawa’s parents?” The sparkly blue Zacian had been partially reading a novel she had brought along about long separated family members who fell into a forbidden romance.
The white and peach colored kitsune shook her head, her short sunset hair flowed in response. “Probably not. I don’t recall anyone moving here.”
Kawa interjected, “From what I was told by my parents, both sides have been out of Japan for a few generations.”
The whole group managed to talk the day away. When Kawa realized the time, she felt it was time for her to return home. Looking to Rao and Cleo, “Thank you for putting up with me. Meeting more kitsunes just made my day. Maybe we could meet again tomorrow?”
Rao nodded her head. “I can’t speak for Cleo, but I would be glad to meet up tomorrow.”
Cleo shrugged, “You could join us on part of the trip we have planned.”
Kawa then went up to Lyra. “And thank you for indulging on my selfish request.”
Lyra smiled. “No problem. You get home safe now.”
With that, Kawa left. Soon after the blue kitsune left, Rao spoke up. “Cute kid. What do you think the odds are that she’ll join our merry band of misfits?” She had strange warmth in her magenta eyes.
Choco objected. “Oh, you can’t be serious. We just met her!” Her insect wings buzzed angerly in response.
Rao turned to Choco. “And? Isn’t that how most of use got to be friends right now? Aside from me and Cleo, the rest of us are only friends due to a short chance meeting. It is kind of a pattern at this point.”
Arabella then spoke up. “I think she seemed nice enough. I don’t see any issue with letting her into our group.”
Fae spoke up. “While I agree she seemed nice, Choco does have a point.” As she stood up, her metal wings and crown gleamed in the light. “Besides, we don’t even know if would want to move to join our group. It would be wrong to push it on her if she doesn’t want it.”
Dial, who had just finished a particularly tough portion of the game, entered the conversation. “I have to agree with Fae and Choco here. All we know is Kawa seems to be a nice person and wanted to meet fellow kitsunes. It is quite possible that she got her fill tonight.” Seeing Rao look a little down, Dial continued. “That being said, she did ask to meet up tomorrow. So long as everyone agrees, we could try to gauge her interest tomorrow.”
Most everyone agreed that they should see if she might be interested in joining their group. Choco held out for a while until she hesitantly agreed. Rao then spoke up excitedly. “Great! I can’t wait for tomorrow.”
Not gonna lie, I really enjoyed writing the first half, but the second half was kind of meh to me. I just couldn't think of a better way to finish the story. I think what really got me down was realizing that I would have to try to organically add in descriptions for 6 characters at once. I couldn't really think of a way to do that, so I just decided to give brief descriptions instead. But, now that the final intro story is done, I can move onto writing other things.
