The colors on this are great and for some reason it looks like it gets slowly darker further down you get.

That's entirely possible, even though I only use flat colors to fill in the characters, the texture overlay adds a lot of variation.

Oooo I didn't know the background was an overlay...I need to remember that for my own coloring pieces. Is there any particular technique that you use to make sure the textured effect doesn't overshadow the characters while at the same time showing up so well around them?

Just play with the opacity, if it's too overpowering try making it a little more transparent. And choose textures that are more uniform and subtle rather than ones with really obvious patterns.

Thanks for that. I don't know what program you use (I would assume something better than a free one) but I am sure overall I can figure it out with GIMP...which is what I use.

I use Paint Shop Pro 6 but it's quite possible to do the same technique in GIMP, just put the texture on a new layer over your colors/lineart and put the setting on Overlay.
