This is a Blue Fox, but as the natives of the island call them, Bluies. They are identical in size to Earth's Red Fox. There are also two variations of Bluies. Depending on where one lives on the island depends on which type you see the most of. But before I get into that, let's get on with the anatomical mumble jumbo.
Bluies have normal anatomy aside from the addition of a Fire Tube and a Fire Sac. With these additions, Bluies can breathe fire. Unfortunately, Bluies cannot make the fire on their own, as they cannot eat the plant that gives them the ingredient to do so. Hence, they hunt down other fire breathing animals or insects and are able to extract the ingredients needed to breathe fire. The concoction is made in their Fire Sac, and the Fox can willingly use it whenever. However, what is stored aways is usually only good for one good burst of fire. Breathing fire is generally a last resort defense mechanism.
As stated above, there are two types of Bluies: The Fisherman's Bluie and the Hunter's Bluie. The differences between the two are pretty subtle. Aside from diet and location, the only differences noted are ear size and whisker length. Fisherman's has shorter ears and longer whiskers, whereas Hunter's have longer ears and shorter whiskers. It is believed they evolved like this because the Fisherman's need their long whiskers to skim the surface of water, checking for fish, whereas the Hunter's need their larger ears to hear for prey in the forests. Regardless of type, both types have closed eyes and tend to rely on other senses the most.
Bluies are like the domestic dog in Crossroads. They make great companions and help those that live on the island greatly. In the capital city of Ganesa, Fisherman's Bluies are seen helping fisherman catch multiple fish, while in the forest city of Alvar, Hunter's Bluies are seen prowling around with their masters.
All Bluies have blue fur with black markings. No Bluie shares the same black pattern.
The Bluie pictured here is a character named Maya.
