See that little card in the corner? That's not mine. In Japan back in the 90s they released a series of official trading cards, mostly focused on and inspired by the creepy CGI-animated TV show where Donkey Kong sounded like a stoner who was somehow younger than Diddy. I was asked to basically expand on this card scenario.
The inclusion of Tiny Kong here wasn't actually part of the comm; that was my idea. I wanted to give some more context to the picture.

During the final battle when it's Tiny's turn, she shrinks and goes inside K Rool's very obvious hole in his boot as she uses her crossbow, which the ammo are feathers, to shoot at his toes whenever they stop attacking you and raise up
Admittedly it's kinda ambiguous what's going on since you shoot the feathers quill-first which you'd assume they'd stab enemies... and each toe you shoot at becomes red, letting you know you successfully attacked them previously as you aim for the other ones... but shooting the quills at the toes makes a cartoonish giggling sound implying he's being tickled? It's kinda confusing if you think about it.

Yeah, I feel like they were going for tickling imagery as a means of comedy, but the actual execution of the scene seemed to be much more about pain than anything else. It was sort of odd. Honestly, I never was a big fan of the idea of K. Rool being ticklish. Something about it just seemed kinda off to me. XD
Yeah, again, the mixture of messages of having enemies getting killed being shot by the sharp end of the quill all throughout the game... and then cartoonish giggle sounds when shooting at K Rool's toes implying being tickled... and then seeing the toes you shot at and supposedly tickled are all red now meaning they're sore/in pain?
I can't tell what I'm being told here :P Maybe I could try my luck asking Grant Kirkhope on Twitter

That official trading card looks a bit too similar to Wart when it comes to the King's face. Everything else on it is about right though. Its got that kind of face that's used in older, 80's videogames that have a partial anime and old US cartoon style hybridized together for something not quite anime, but also not quite US cartoon.
I think that's more to do with the fact that he's facing directly at the audience and we're seeing his snout from the front.
Yes, well put. I kind of like that art style that emerged more and more as the Japanese and American markets were starting to work with each other.

Same, its got a very unique flare to it, from the toothy grins and smiles, to open mouth expressions like laughing, the design of the eyes themselves, just about everything screams a unique and old Nintendo artstyle that had a very specific time period of usage in both finalized artwork and promotional artwork.
I kinda miss that artstyle, it was so unique then and even now, honestly. But of course, all characters need their own defined art style to bring out every single ounce of personality they have in their expressions, body language, choice of clothes (including for the occasion), attitude, everything. If the wrong art style is used, some of that gets lost in translation most of the time. Rare is the occurrence where nothing is lost in translation at all, even more so is the enhancement in that different art style.
S-Sort of like how well you do the King's anatomy here, from his face to...w-well...you get what I mean.

As much flak as the 90s gets for its bizarre aesthetic choices, there's something uniquely appealing about the game art from that era. It walked a fine bridge between traditional and digital too.
That's true. What's interesting is how often art style could change between Japan and the US. As far as I know, they still alter the box art for Kirby games to make him appear more/less angry based on region.
XDDD

Preemptively sorry for any discomfort! And it is very hilarious. The first one references the american boxart. The second references World of Light's...uuuhhh..."everyone is dead" scene and also acts like a sequel! Both of those are quite literally 5 years apart give or take!
