This is a color test / design mock-up for a beach house's nameplate sign. (Beach houses have names, at least in the Outer Banks, NC. I think this is to help tourists remember the address of that great rental their friends told them about last year. Or possibly to distract people from the fact that just about every last address is off Highway 12, seeing as that is the ONLY road on the island. ^_^)
Anyways. The house in question is "Dusty's Dunes" - named after a chocolate lab that loved and adored the beach, from frolicking amidst the waves to digging for shipwrecked treasure amongst the sandy dunes. The commissioners are family, and are not familiar with the whole art-commissioning process, so I've kinda been spinning my wheels since March, whipping up concept sketches and designs and whatnot and coming away with very little in the way of constructive feedback.
So last week, while I was at the beach with said family members, I made a few more sketches, then inked one and lobbed it at
indigoangelcat, who was a few blocks away and made the tactical error of mentioning on an "art night" that she wanted to paint some beach watercolors but wasn't inspired to draw. (Also b/c she has this nifty set of 20 watercolor bricks that totally kicks my vintage Crayola 8 set to the curb and runs it over for good measure.)
Anyways. The result is very nice and colory and, when presented to the commissioners, confirmed a sneaking suspicion of mine: this is PRECISELY what ONE of them wanted, and ENTIRELY TOO MUCH BEACH AND NOT NEARLY ENOUGH DOG for the other.
Soooo....I'm gonna PhotoShop up some alternates (since portrait/landscape/circle layout is still being heavily debated, as well as text placement/clarity option) to see if we can't find a happy medium somewhere. In the meantime, parents have nice happy free arts to decorate the house with. Might digitally fade/crop parts of it so it can be used on business cards or something, too, because I think it could be neat.
Anyways.
Pencil sketch and Micron inks (though only the dog was inked) by me; watercolors by the amazing
indigoangelcat. Collaborations FTW! :D
