I do it differently depending on the model or how I want to do it. For this one, I used Blender's Freestyle feature. Though for others like my renders of Mike, I use a fresnel-based outline (Taking the angle of the model based on what the camera sees and sets it to black if it passes a certain point) which is done in the material for him instead.
