Both Bhuddism and Shino are cunfused in some parts in Japan.
Monks,Shinto priests,mediums do that and I believe bad spiriiiiiiiiiiiits!!!!

And we always ask Shinto priests to do 'Jichin-sai(地鎮祭)' to settle Ujigami-sama(氏神様/Spirits of particular places) before building houses.
Or we might be killed by spirits!!:P

lol it's alright, religions are very often confuses in Taiwan too, and I believe there are similar pray ritual about peace the spirits before any kind construction builds.
