It is interesting. I bet it was fun for them to build, and even more so to operate! I used to go to gas engine and tractor shows all the time with my grandfather, and I saw plenty of old steam engines, but I don't remember one quite like this. Last time I went to a show was 5 years ago though.

it can be done and get you chugging on down the road
you just need to extract as much usable energy out if your steam running ti through a condenser or a pre heater would help to pre heat your boiler water when you start to run low lessening the pressure drop when you add water
