In preparation for the local furmeet group's bowling meetup (and because the original handpaws were, well, crap) I decided to re-make the handpaws for Kaynus. The new ones are completely machine-sewn (well, the pads were sewn on by hand, but the stitching that counts is machine-sewn :) ), the fur was shaved shorter, there's no claws, and they fit more snugly as well.
I explicitly made these for use with the full suit and will make a second pair (re-using and extending the sleeves of the old handpaws, shown in the lower right of the image) to make some t-shirt friendly partial suit hands next. For those I'll probably bring the claws back, but made with translucent Sculpey instead of the painted Sculpey ones I had before (and nowhere near as huge, gah).
What the photos don't really show well is the number of things done wrong in the first handpaws. For one, I actually cut out places for the paw pads from the palm piece, with the intent of stuffing each paw pad and sewing it into the gap for a nice, snug fit. But when I was building these I decided, "Hey, I can save a whole lot of time by just hot gluing them in place! This is awesome!" Wow was that a bad idea--I think I had at least 2-3 pads dislodge themselves with each use and was constantly re-gluing them.
Another defect was the claws I had in there. They looked great, but their bases were so huge that the ends of my fingers would always flop around and I had to wear some thick snow gloves just to get a decent fit. Between the thick gloves and the stuffed paw pads, any sort of reliable grip was just not happening.
But the worst thing of all was that something possessed me to sew the hands together, by hand, *from the outside*! And it wasn't even a good stitch! With just a little bit of a pull you could see between the two pieces of fur, which was silly.
So yeah, lots of n00b mistakes that are hopefully now corrected. :D Hopefully the test run at the alley will go well, but, regardless, it's nice to not have to worry so much about my handpaws' durability anymore. :)

Thanks! :) Now if I could just get the fingers to all be consistent sizes I think I'll be set, ha ha. On both hands one of the fingers has a much smaller base than the rest (I want to say it's the ring fingers), so fitting those particular fingers is a bit of a challenge, but ah well. I'll try a minor revision of the template for the partial paws and see if that fixes it, but fortunately it's not too big of a deal.
Woo - they look great! You can immediately see how much more dexterity and precision are in the new ones. That ought to make using them for any outing that requires some dexterity a LOT easier. Well darn... I guess I'm gonna need to come back down and visit to update all the suit pics I took now. :P
Ha ha, yeah, they ended up working really well for bowling yesterday (and no damage to repair, woo!). So maybe just a few more minor template tweaks and I'll finally have some basic hands worked out.
And darn straight you're going to have to come back down here and update all the suit pics! :P And don't forget the disc golf and BBQ, either. :D
