Troy Sanders is a friend and business partner of the main characters in Long Division book III: Hamilton & John. After graduating from college with a business degree in 1971, Troy decided to put his education and experience as a waiter to use and open what he described as a “coffee bar”.

Troy opened The Student Lounge in 1972, adjacent to The Professor’s Study, a used bookstore owned and operated by his friends, John & Hamilton. At about the same time, the first Starbucks opened in Seattle, some 1700 miles away.
