Here is a simple chart on where you can and cannot pet your dragon.
For the best results pet along the neck, especially the front and under the chin. Petting the rump like a cat is the other best spot. Other good spots include the belly sides as well as the top of the head. Petting the areas highlighted in purple will turn any big mean scary old dragon into a big scaly kitten.
Areas that you shouldn't pet include the wings and legs. Some dragons may allow you to and might even like it but as a general rule, don't pet these areas as they won't care for it. Other areas that should never be pet are the paws, tail, and definetly not the groin. If you try to touch those areas there is a good chance you will be bit or worse. Obviously grabbing the horns or claws is also a terrible idea, but that shouldn't need to be said. Areas highlighted in red or orange should not be touched.
Follow these guidelines and you can be confident that your dragon will love you. Treat your dragon well and it'll return the favor.
