Yousuf and his brother Zahor were born in the Vivian Mob, a group of meerkats named after his own mother, who was also the leader. After the sudden passing of their mother, Zahor and Yousuf take to roving with some of their brothers and end up encountering a mob known as the Udevu. The mob's dominant female Vivuli was without an unrelated male to breed with and, being the oldest of the brothers, Zahor becomes the dominant male by her side. Vivuli later ends up being killed by a predator after which her younger sister Maua becomes the new leader.

With his brother as the dominant male, Yousuf was tasked with babysitting his numerous nieces and nephews. But he was never completely satisfied with being a simple pupsitter. He wanted what his brother had, a title of co-leader with a lovely lady by his side, but he knows that he wouldn't stand much of a chance against Zahor in a fight. He gets this chance one day when Zahor gets separated from the mob one day following an encounter with a jackal that sent the mob running for cover. With Zahor missing and presumed dead, Yousuf becomes the Udevu's new dominant male beside Maua. Yousuf's time as the dominant male was short lived as after his pups with Maua are born, Zahor returns to the Udevu alive and challenges him to regain his title. Yousuf ends up being no match for his brother and loses the fight, receiving a scar on his left eyebrow in the process.

Yousuf was back where he started: stuck as a subordinate male. Whenever he wasn't stuck at the burrow babysitting, he would often go roving in the hopes of spreading his genes elsewhere. Some of his nephews later accompany him once they're old enough and one mob they frequently visit is their old rivals, the Leza. During one such visit Yousuf manages to mate with the group's dominant female Karazana, who had just recently lost her mate, and she later gives birth to two sons. Feeling lucky, Yousuf returns to the Leza's territory one day in the hopes of finding Karazana and, maybe, become a dominant male once more. Surprisingly, Karazana allows him into the group and it seems like Yousuf would finally be a dominan male again.

Unfortunately, Yousuf ends up being viciously attacked by some Leza males returning from a roving trip who mistake him for an enemy meerkat. He crawls into a nearby bolt hole and dies from his injuries, with the rest of the Udevu never learning of his fate.
