Zahor and his brother Yousuf were born in the Vivian Mob, a group of meerkats named after his own mother, who was also the leader. After the sudden passing of their mother, he and his brother take to roving and end up encountering a mob known as the Udevu. The mob's dominant female Valerie was without an unrelated male to breed with, so Zahor quickly took the role of dominant male and became her mate. The pair end up having one litter of seven pups together before Valerie is sadly killed by a predator while the group is out foraging.
After Valerie's death, her younger sister Maua became the new dominant female of the Udevu, taking Zahor as her mate. Zahor fathered a few of her pups before being overthrown by Yousuf, but after his pups with Maua are born Zahor challenged his brother and regained the title of dominant male, leaving Yousuf with a scar on his left eyebrow.
Zahor and Maua rule the Udevu together for many years afterwards, the mob becoming very large and successful under their leadership. Zahor loved his mate very deeply and had always assumed that they would be together until the end of their days, but that changed when Maua ended up dying from a cobra bite. After his mate's death, Zahor felt that he had lost all sense of purpose in his life. He would occasionally babysit his mate's grandchildren that had recently been born in the group, but without Maua he felt...meaningless.
Zahor stays in the Udevu for a few more months before he and a few of his sons take to roving, hoping to find new mob to join. Their travels end up leading them to the Azize, an Udevu splinter mob being lead by his niece, Malene. Despite being unable to breed with her for obvious reasons, Zahor ends up becoming the group's dominant male by her side. He teaches her how to lead and even helps her care for her pups that she has sired by roving males. And while it was nothing like the days when he ruled alongside Maua, Zahor felt like he had a purpose in life once more.
Zahor ends up living to a ripe old age, dying peacefully under a shady tree one day while surrounded by his family.
And here we have Zaphod! Believe it or not, this guy was actually the oldest meerkat to have ever lived in the KMP study area, outliving both his mate and his birth mob from which he originated. Most wild meerkats don't even make it to 10 years of age, so he was very lucky to have lived such a long life.
