I pretty much followed this tutorial:

Started off with a big uniform gray blob on the bottom layer, then added light and shading on the next few layers, and finally drew a lot of thin 3-pixel brush strokes on top of it all to look like individual hairs. I'll see if I can post a "breakdown" showing how it's put together.
