Like any normal person I've tried anthropomorphic octopi before, but didn't come up with anything I liked. But then I had this idea for a variation where the body is a stretched out version of the octopus's "foot" portion that seems to work for me. The tentacles on his face are the front-most arms, thus his mouth is not such a far cry from where an octopus's mouth ought to be. Then his arms, and two more arms that are the clothing, and then legs.
The musculature, bones, and "hair" that he appears to have are merely muscle configurations designed to blend in with vertebrates. Just as an octopus uses its ring-like muscles to change its texture to blend in with its surroundings, so to does this guy seek to blend in with those around him. As such he probably can change his texture and skin color if he wants to hide or express moods just as an octopus would.
I figure he probably doesn't have difficulty breathing as long as he's relatively moist (which thanks to artistic license is probably indefinite). He does carry a respirator, however, as it would help in times of heightened physical activity.
I gave him pronounced suckers to act in place of fingers in situations where fingers are required (like typing). Otherwise I'm sure tentacle arms are just fine.
Because I like this design a lot, I'll probably use him as one of Rao's space pirate crew (there's more to Rao than just his girlish good looks, after all). He will not be called 'anthropus' if I can help it. I'll need a real name for him, then maybe I'll give him a more detailed character sheet. Until then, Anthropus.
-the Anthropus is mine-
Wow, there are zero invertebrates represented in FA's species list.
