Been doing a lot of sketches and not much in the way of finished projects. Tried my hand at sketching a werewolf Merton from Big Wolf on Campus.
The episode where that happened had so many good ideas in it and yet somehow managed to bomb every single one of them.
Merton starting out just fine and slowly getting angrier/crueler as the episode goes on? Good! Fun idea. I'm down with that. Having his underlining anger over being hurt and pushed around his whole life be the catalyst that makes him start lashing out? Fucking PERFECT idea. Merton still being manipulative and using his "I'm innocent and frail" shtick to trick people? YES! Love it! Letting Merton have a Ginger Snaps "I'm hot and confident now" moment? YES, PLEASE! Having him turn against Tommy when his well-meaning attempts to control him/keep him safe start to chafe, leaving the climax of the episode to come down to a confrontation between Merton and Lori, who's been down this path herself? -chef's kiss!-
The execution on those ideas? Awful. Just fuckin' atrocious. Thanks I hate it.
Lori and Merton's confrontation in particular feels like such a missed opportunity. That was a really good chance for development for the characters and their relationship, and instead, we get barely anything for Lori emotionally and Merton just being a creepy pervert, because evil.
We have two characters with very different anger issues, neither of which deals with them well, who've had kind of a rocky friendship, and who now have this big pretty traumatic thing in common, having to confront each other. With one essentially having to talk the other down, or trick them. There was so much there to work with. And we got...a big old nothing.
I kinda wish I had the time and attention span to do something with that but I probably never will.
Instead I just did sketches of woof Merton. This was the only one that's decent enough to show off.
