Philomela's Last Flight - By Shwonky
Shwonky drew the last time Philomela was canonically seen flying. I believe the artist here did an extremely good job. ❤️
Kinda destructive as far as creation processes go... buuut... still!
Cameos of Kermit and Liberty Eight are also in the pic. Because.

that... uh... contradicts all i know. I based Philomela's story on The Clockwork Nightingale and also the Myth of Philomela. True. She turns into a demon rather than a nightingale. But that is only because she already was a nightingale. The base Wikipedia page sums her story better than i could. If i remember correctly.
I thought it might be an editor's error in the footnote, but later in the play, around line 670 (don't know the exact line because this translation only puts line numbers at the top of each column) Procne actually makes an appearance onstage dressed as a nightingale. Aristophanes was a classical Greek, an Athenian of the 4th century BC. How could he have made such a mistake? Furthermore, his plays are neither secret nor obscure; a century or more ago, every well-educated person would have been required to read them in school and even today I would expect a Classical scholar to be familiar with them. So now I wonder where the compilers of mythology got their information. Why do they say Philomela was the nightingale? J.A. Coleman in the Dictionary of Mythology says there are different versions of the story, but also states definitely that Procne turned into a swallow and Philomela a nightingale as if that part of the tale was beyond dispute. Coleman does not cite his sources. Aristophanes flatly contradicts this account.
Sorry i answered while working and did not notice you were naming a specific author.
Okay.
So.
*inhales and prepares tipey fingers to write*
"Nightingale" is usually Philomela because that is literally what the name means in ancient greek.
Okay, the name actually meant "she likes apples" which... well... neither nightingales not swallows actually are particularly fond of.
They are carnivorous birds of prey... uh... okay, insect prey... but still...
The problem comes with Prokne whose name actually means "the one with the black marks" which... you know... nightingales are usually just sepia-colored things, i mean, you commented on that too when making Philomela, and it's the main reason why the comic was drawn in sepia colors. 😅
The only nightingales with black spots are the american ones all european nightingales are the same sepia color.
Meanwhile all the swallows and the martins in general tend to have "tactical camouflage" kind of plumage.
So... "historically" the myth goes "Philomela is the thrush thingie, Prokne is the martin thingie".
This is because female nightingales, unlike the males actually do not sing, they tend to stay as quiet as possible, while swallows sing loud and clear (both sexes).
Myths were made to teach to kids and in this case the teaching goes "female nightingales do not sing" (and i guess also "if you get raped you better not sing, or you will get silenced" 😅)
The story itself comes as an offshot/modification of the story of Medea https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b7WH30_8vos
Then... we have the playwrights.
Which, aside from being really bad at knowing anything about bilogy... they like "originality" and adding "a twist".
You know how people like to be "original" so... uhm... king arthur might be a woman in a "knightly" armored french maid dress?
Yyyyeah.
Same reasoning.
The myth was not written by Aristophanes, and he wanted to be original.
Sophocles turns Philomela in an hawk because "all she could do was scream" later playwrights use the hawk as the bird in which Teres turns into as it can be seen to prey on trushes and martins.
Eusthasius has Procne be the one that gets raped and then silenced because "swallows have no song" which... uh?!?! whatevs.
I myself gave Philekdikisi no mouth and no music box. Though she still speaks... via magic.
So... yeah... the answer is: "originality". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Yus... i hope the artist gets better soon, she has basically been prevented from arting for more than 1 year and has been slowly trying to re-teach herself how to use a drawing tablet.
She does not feel like she can draw for me yet, but she has done quite the progress.

oh, it's a scene from the (still incomplete) comic. https://www.furaffinity.net/gallery.....-Moon-Children
