There are other Disney movies who also done similar concepts and did them better as well. Heck, Luca is basically Pixar's telling of The Little Mermaid. This issue is that Disney was known for pushing boundaries. They weren't afraid to go dark or discuss mature themes like death so long as it had a happy ending. You're right about not every movie has to be perfect, but they shouldn't be so forgettable like Christopher Robin,The BFG, or The Good Dinosaur.
I thought it did not try to be anything more than what it was. A fun adventure. I dont need or want every movie I watch to have me bawling my eyes out. Or raving about how amazing it is. Sometimes all I want is a simple, fun story done well. A pallete cleanser.
Is it amazing? Not necessarily. Does it push boundaries or hit those emotional buttons? Not really. But it doesn't have to and thats not the kind of movie it is; and it doesn't try to be that kind of movie.
And thats fine. Not every movie is going to be a ground breaking genre defining lord of the rings. Nor should they be.

^ I agree.
I don't understand why people need every movie to be 'the next best thing' instead of just enjoying something that is sweet and charming and tells a heartwarming little story. Luca is an excellent little film about childhood wonder that has so much charm. But I guess they didn't try and wow us, so it can't be good.

It doesn't have to be groundbreaking to be good, but it should at least try be something that isn't going to be easily forgotten. Disney lately has been have a record of making forgettable movies like that ones stated in my previous comment. It's not due to a lack of imagination, but the passion of other than making money out of it which is the fault of Disney as a corporation, not the people involved.
For the most part, Luca has all the good aspects of a good film.

The director is a big fan of Miyazaki, and this obviously was heavily influenced by movies like Kiki 's Delivery Service, and Porco Rosso.
I myself felt like it was kind of like a mashup of Sandlot, Kiki's Delivery Service, and maybe Spirited Away. It felt nostalgic watching it from the first time.
It's also the first movie in forever that I've actually had the urge to watch more than once, something I haven't experienced since Castle in the Sky.

I have to admit, Pixar truly has advanced in their settings design. Without all the characters there I would truly believed it was an actual Italian town. I truly love the water animation myself.
But I can see that kind of Studio Ghibli-esque vibe from it with the concept of one non-human dreaming of what it's like to be a part of the human world.
