(Was going to do an RP, but it got cancelled. It gave me the vibes of Black&White, Age of Mythology, and the like. We'd be playing as gods and such. Normally I don't like playing overly powerful characters, but this concept seemed pretty fun. But even before it got cancelled my brain had flooded itself with lore and ideas. So, I figured I'd still post and share, even if this is all there is.)
Titles:
- Name: Adontus
- Aliases: Adon, Whiskered Lord, Fiend of the Forest, Fickle Beast
Symbol(s):
- A cat face with a wide open mouth, the rims of its ears and cheeks forming most of a circle
- A bat-winged cat.
- A feline tail bearing a gemstone ring
Portfolio:
- Mischief: Luck / Misfortune
- Indulgence: Greed / Gluttony
- Nature: Cats / Precious Stones / Soft things
Sacred:
- Softness: Adontus finds soft items sacred. Spongy foods, soft plants like mosses, animals with thick plush fur or softened with ample adipos, and plump humans as well.
- Gemstones: Adontus loves sparkly pretty things, and often accepts offerings of gemstones, or items adorned with gemstones. Particularly fluorite.
Appearances:
Like many gods, Adontus takes a number of forms depending on his whims. The most commonly glimpsed forms are:
- A lost kitten with striking eyes, typically in shifting shades of green, purples, and blues.
- A youthful man clad in rags but wearing extravagant jewellery.
- A plump elderly man with cat ears, cat tail, a cheerful grin and a deep laugh.
Abilities:
The limits of the gods are difficult to define, and are best depicted by the tales and accounts of deeds they have done. Adontus has performed many wonders and feats, the most notable of record being the following:
- Cursing men to become lost and wander
- Cursing men into the forms of beasts
- Appearing in multiple places at once
- Taking multiple forms and guises
- Creating food from thin air
- Blessing followers with strange and occult abilities and forms
- Speaking with plants and animals and stones
Land:
Adontus rules over the nation of Astritus, which encompasses two large cities and a mighty scattering of smaller towns and villages. The entire nation is surrounded and amply flooded by a mighty forest with hearty patches of swampland and underground caverns. Thin trails, no wider than two wagons, snake across the countryside like strands of spiderweb, weaving around the most dangerous sections of woods and swamp, connecting all the little patches of humanity to one another. There are very very few areas that are suitable for farming, though this has never been an issue; Adontus provides food to all of his loyal followers.
Adontus has placed a curse on his forests, and non-Astritian men who would travel within them often become lost, dying from unfortunate accidents long before hunger or dehydration or woodland fiends might end them.
Populace:
Often known outside Astritus as "filthy forest folk" the Astritian people are mostly simple, happy folk. Because the nation lacks a need to farm for food, and instead receive their food largely through offerings to their god, the most common lines of work in Astritus are artists, craftsmen, and miners. While many other jobs exist, these lines of work are held in the utmost esteem. Because of this, the nation's crafts and artwork have evolved in much more sophisticated, elaborate, and skilled directions than any of its neighboring nations, and indeed, much more than most nations in the world.
While the settlements are dominantly populated by human people, the woods are populated by many diverse monsters, ranging from common pesky imps to oversized and dominating bears. Though Adontus has divinely ordained safe passage to Astritians who travel and maintain the roads, any who wander off the path may easily find themselves victim to the odd creatures of the woods.
Devout:
The most devout of Adontus' followers are chosen by him and granted lives of luxury and hedonism, all their wishes being fulfilled as he pampers and dotes on them as reward for their love and loyalty.
Due to a contract forged through several underworld deities, Adontus has carved himself a slice of the afterlife, which he has established to follow suit: His loyal followers are granted access to this heavenly paradise after death, where he keeps them all as precious pets.
Heralds:
Some of the most devout are given special privilege, and duty, beyond the rest. These heralds are bestowed with unique occult abilities and are often granted new and fascinating forms.
Reception:
Many other local nations regard Adontus as a demon rather than a god, and consider the land of Astritus as a cesspit best avoided. Because the nation is plagued with "cursed forests" and swampland, there is little to gain from raiding it. The few attempts that have been made met swift ends through various acts of misfortune, often ending in the inadvertent massacres of the invading parties.
Very few traders enter or exit Astritus' borders, and the trade that does take place is conducted only under the supervision of the specially chosen heralds of Adontus.
